Small summer landscape with a village. Oil / wood. 28.5 x 35.5 cm. Sign., Dat. 33. On his advice, he completed an apprenticeship as a gardener and concentrated on the subject of tropical agriculture. He only came to art through contact with Hermann Tröltsch. Asmus Debus' favorite motif for his watercolors, oil paintings and monotypes was the domestic landscape. During the Second World War he worked as a war painter. However, his pictures were characterized by Melnacholie and the longing for peace. Debus was also an original, "a wild dog", as the Dachau painter Karl Huber remembers, he still knew him personally. "The Assi was a Bergfex and he liked to drink red wine," says Huber. Debauchery was not uncommon. From 1932 to 1945 Debus lived in Dachau, where he belonged to the artists' association from 1934. In 1945 he went to Haindlfing near Freising. There he held the office of mayor for seven years "because no one else was there," as Karl Huber knows. "The Assi even married the people in the swimming trunks," reveals Huber insider knowledge. He had once signed a marriage certificate incorrectly and, in order to be able to correct this himself, was put into office and dignity for a single day by ministerial decision.
