Billy DeBeck Signed Barney Google Cartoon

            Est: $300 - $400

DeBeck William Billy DeBeck Signed Barney Google Cartoon   An original whimsical cartoon by Billy DeBeck (1890-1942) depicting his well-known comical character Barney Google. The pencil and orange colored pencil drawing on paper appears on "DeBeck / New York City" letterhead with deckled edges, and is personally dedicated/signed "To Selvy Davis / With Best Wishes / DeBeck" at lower right. Uneven light toning to stationery and support mat, else very good to near fine. 6.125" x 9.25".   Accompanied by a companion "DeBeck / New York City" envelope hand-inscribed by DeBeck as "Selvy Davis, Esq. / 58 Mount Vernon St / Fitchburg / Mass." The envelope bears a cancelled 2 cent red violet George Washington stamp and was postmarked from Grand Central Annex, New York on September 10, 1930. Torn flap verso, else very good.   William DeBeck had trained at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts to become a Flemish School painter, but quickly abandoned it when he discovered his cartooning ability. His caricatures and cartoons appeared in many early twentieth-century newspapers and magazines. One of DeBeck's most famous cartoon creations was Barney Google, a sports-obsessed "average Joe" who haunted the race tracks.   Barney Google--along with Snuffy Smith, a wholesome Appalachian hillbilly, Spark Plug, a dopey-looking racehorse, and Sweet Mama, the love interest--enjoyed enormous mainstream popularity in the 1920-30s. Artistically, DeBeck drew on the "big foot" comic tradition, which exaggerated characters' features for comedic effect. His comic strips are also credited with introducing new phrases into American slang, such as "heebie jeebies," "bodacious," and more. At his death in 1942, DeBeck's Barney Google appeared in over 200 newspapers. An iteration of the Barney Google comic strip is still published today!   WE PROVIDE IN-HOUSE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE!
