    • Attributed to Bonaventure de Bar (French, 1700–1729) Le Retour de Chasse
      Feb. 14, 2023

Attributed to Bonaventure de Bar (French, 1700–1729) Le Retour de Chasse

      Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Attributed to Bonaventure de Bar (French, 1700–1729) Le Retour de Chasse Oil on canvas 28 3/4 x 35 5/8 in. (73 x 90.5cm) Provenance Collection of the Comte Normand, Paris and Nice. By descent in the Normand family. Newhouse Galleries, Inc., New York, New York. Acquired directly from the above in 1965. Private Collection, Pennsylvania. The relined canvas in overall good to very good condition. With light craquelure throughout, mostly visible along the top outer edge in the green areas due to an excess of varnish, which catches the light in a way that makes the cracks visible. Otherwise stable, and relatively minor. Small flake at upper center, close to the top edge, in the trees. Examination under UV light reveals a layer of old greenish varnish throughout. With pinpoint dots of restoration in the sky at upper left corner. Some feathery inpainting at upper right corner (in the trees) as well as at center right, near the background horses and at bottom right corner (very minimal). Small repair in the upper right corner (the corner itself). The figure present well: minor repair on the back man's rear (the one scavenging through the basket). Minuscule pinpoint dots of inpainting on the woman's face (the one dressed in blue), parts of her dress (at the bottom), and on the figure's coat, to the right of her. All very minimal: see Specialist's pictures for more details. To request access to additional images, or for any other information, please email Raphael Chatroux at rchatroux@freemansauction.com.
