Footnote: Note Norman Stanley Potter (1926–1970) was a collector with wide-ranging interests who developed an eye for classical arts and built a collection of Asian art, antiquities, and early European art. As a prominent mathematician and engineer, he participated in the Manhattan Project and later was a designer of complex defense systems.         Henry Golden Dearth (American, 1864-1918) oil on canvas luminist landscape titled "Autumnal Hues" depicting a group of structures and grove of trees set between a broad horizontal expanse of grass and a clouded sky. Signed "H. Dearth" lower right. Paul Foinet artist supplier stamp en verso of canvas; back board with M.A. Newhouse St. Louis paper label. Framed under glass in an early 20th century giltwood molded frame. 19 1/2" H x 30" W sight, 27 3/8" x 37" framed. Provenance: the collection of James E. Cowan (1858-1930, whose partial collection formed the basis of the Cowan Collection at the Parthenon Art Museum in Nashville), by descent to current consignor. Biography: Henry Golden Dearth was a distinguished American painter who studied in Paris and continued to spend his summers in France painting in the Normandy region. He would return to New York in winter, and became known for his moody paintings of the Long Island area. Around 1912, Dearth changed his artistic style, and began to include portrait and still life pieces as well as his paintings of rock pools created mainly in Brittany. A winner of several career medals and the Webb prize in 1893, Dearth died suddenly in 1918 aged 53 and was survived by a wife and daughter.         signed. Dearth studied with Horace Johnson and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was a member of the Society of American Artists and the National Academy of Design. He exhibited at National Academy of Design (1888), Society of American Artists, Art Institute of Chicago (1889-90), Paris Expo, Pan-Am Expo, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Corcoran Gallery. He was known for his French landscapes, particularly of the coast of Normandy; he also painted in East Hampton, Long Island in the 1890’s.
