WILLIAM WOOD DEANE, OWS,  BRITISH 1825-1873-  THE SALA DEI CONSIGLIO (DOGE'S PALACE, VENICE);  PEN

      Est: £400 - £600

William Wood Deane, OWS,  British 1825-1873-  The Sala dei Consiglio (Doge's Palace, Venice);  pencil, watercolour, and bodycolour on paper, 45.5 x 67.5 cm.  Provenance:  with Abbott & Holder, London, 2006.  Private Collection, UK.  Exhibited:  Manchester, 'Royal Jubilee Exhibition', 1887.  Note:  Deane was a painter and architect who travelled in Italy and Spain over the course of his career, first visiting Italy in 1850, and returning to London in 1852 with a number of sketches, presumably including the present work. This composition effectively captures the grandeur of the Sala dei Consiglio in Doge's Palace in Venice, vast in scale and elaborately decorated. Indeed, the emptiness of the room, depicted by Deane without furniture or figures, serves only to emphasise its impressive and intimidating proportions.
