Sarah was one of California's finest still life specialists. Born in Washington, DC on July 10, 1852. Sarah Bender settled in San Francisco in 1865. When the School of Design opened in 1874, she was one of the first pupils to enroll and was greatly influenced there by Virgil Williams. In 1904 she married Harold DeWolfe. (Curiously, some of her 1890s paintings are signed with her married name.) The earthquake and fire of 1906 destroyed her studio at 509 Sacramento Street taking with it many of her early works. She later had a studio on Hyde Street and a home at 3400 Laguna Street where she died on June 15, 1935.

Sarah Bender De Wolfe (American, 1852-1935) Easter Lilies, 1886 Oil on canvas 39-3/4 x 17-3/4 inches (101.0 x 45.1 cm) Signed and dated lower right: Sarah / E. / Bender / '86 In celebration of Women's History Month EXHIBITED: San Francisco Art Association, San Francisco, California, n.d. Still-life painting was the specialty of artist Sarah Bender de Wolfe, who was born in Washington, D. C. but lived, trained, worked and exhibited for most of her life in California. She attended the California School of Design (now the San Francisco Art Institute) where she studied with the American landscape painter and decorator Virgil Williams, who influenced other well-known California artists such as William Keith and Thomas Hill. De Wolfe participated in the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois, where she exhibited her work at the Woman's Building and the California State Building. The artist also exhibited at the San Francisco Mechanics' Institute, California State Fair, California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894, and the San Francisco Guild of Arts & Crafts. Her memberships included the San Francisco Art Association and the Association of San Francisco Women Artists. Many of de Wolfe's early paintings were destroyed in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, making an assessment of her stylistic evolution rather difficult. The current example from 1886, featuring a lush bouquet of white Easter lilies, would have been both contemporary in terms of its spirited paint handling, but traditional in its neat arrangement in a vase. This painting's provenance is a testament to Bender de Wolfe's ability to attract important patronage. As a label on the back attests, the still life was formerly in the collection of Mrs. Louis P. Drexler, also known as Elise Abigail Drexler - one of the first active female real estate developers in San Francisco. Sarah Bender de Wolfe's works are represented in the collection of the Oakland Museum of California. HID04901242017
