The technique of this piece exhibits the contrast between the loose foliage and the more detailed rendering of the architecture which is characteristic of de Wint's approach, as illustrated in his view of Lincoln Cathedral which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 8 July 2020 (lot 205).

A number of his pictures are in the National Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum and The Collection, Lincoln. He died in London.In 1800, William Hilton was apprenticed to the engraver John Raphael Smith, and around the same time enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools. Another apprentice from 1802 was Peter De Wint, they were inseparable friends. Apprenticed to John Raphael Smith, the mezzotinter and portrait painter, he bought his freedom from Smith in 1806, on condition that he supplied 18 oil paintings over the following two years.In 1806 he visited Lincoln for the first time, with the painter of historical subjects William Hilton, R.A., whose sister Harriet he married in 1810. They had one child, Helen De Wint (1811-1873). De Wint and Hilton lived together in Broad Street, Golden Square, where John Varley lived. Varley gave De Wint lessons and introduced him to Monro, who ran an informal academy for young artists.De Wint often visited Hilton's home in Up-Hill, Lincoln and painted many of his charming landscapes in the district.De Wint first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1807, and the following year at the Gallery of Associated Artists in Watercolours. In 1809 entered the Royal Academy Schools. He was elected an Associate of the Old Water Colour Society in 1810 and was made a full member the following year. By that time, as an established drawing-master, he was spending his summers teaching well-to-do provincial families. In 1812 he became a member of the Society of Painters in Watercolours, where he exhibited for many years, as well as at the Academy.De Wint's life was devoted to art; he painted admirably in oils, and he ranks as one of the chief English watercolorists. "No artist", asserted Alfred William Rich, "ever came nearer painting a perfect picture than did Peter de Wint." He frequently visited his wife's home city of Lincoln, and many of his panoramic landscapes and haymaking scenes are set in Lincolnshire. He occasionally toured in Wales, and in 1828 travelled to Normandy.In Lincoln cathedral is a cenotaph erected by Harriet De Wint (1791-1866) in memory of the two artists - De Wint her husband, and Hilton, her brother. Harriet and the De Wint's only child, Helen, are buried together on the western side of Highgate Cemetery.He was buried in the Hilton family grave in the Savoy Chapel (destroyed by fire on 7 July 1864). The chapel was restored in 1866 and Mrs. De Wint placed a beautiful font in the edifice. Close by a tablet bears the words. 'This font was presented to the Chapel Royal of the Savoy by Harriet De Wint, in place of a Monument previously erected to the memory of her brother William Hilton R.A., her husband Peter de Wint, and other members of her family, whose remains are interred in the adjoining cemetery. The Monument was destroyed by the fire, July VII., MDCCCLXIV. May this tribute be long preserved to the glory of God'.

Dixon, his great grand-daughter A loyal patron of de Wint, William, 2nd Viscount Lowther and Earl of Lonsdale, built Lowther Castle on inheriting the estate in 1802. De Wint executed views of the estate between 1834 and 1843 as a record of the picturesque developments that Lonsdale made to the landscape. The sale of de Wint's studio contents at Christie's in May 1850 included sixteen views of Lowther, of varying sizes, of both the castle and the surrounding parkland. Watercolours by de Wint of Lowther in public institutions include a Distant View of Lowther Castle in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.

Footnote:Peter de Wint was the son of a Dutch-American father and Scottish mother. He trained under B.Rogers and J.R. Smith. Through Dr Munro he was influenced by Thomas Girtin and first exhibited at the R.A. in 1807. First and foremost he was a landscape artist, but other than a visit to Normandy in 1828 he only travelled around England and Wales, having many patrons, including the Earl of Lonsdale and the Earl of Powis. Condition:Some fading. Frame - ok, apart from some minor surface scratches and gilding rubbed.

A Derbyshire Watermill, watercolour on wove paper, with traces of scratching out, and some pencil underdrawing, depicting a thatched building on wooden stilts in a riverscape, two washerwomen crouching at the edge of the river bank, sheet size 40.6 x 57.5cm (16 x 22 5/8ins), verso with Christies' stencil WY732 and manuscript label 'identified by Hammond Smith as probably the picture exhibited at the RA in 1819 - No:418', mounted, framed and glazed (67 x 83.5cm) Qty: (1) Footnote: Exhibited: Possibly London, Royal Academy, 1819, no. 418. Provenance: Collection of Denis Gamberoni; offered at Christie's, London, 'British Art on Paper', 21st November 2007, lot 175. Probably depicting a pre-industrialised woollen mill, powered by water with the looms accommodated in the body of the building. During the Industrial Revolution mills of this type were superceded, for example by those belonging to Richard Arkwright at Cromford, near Matlock, built in 1777 and painted by Joseph Wright of Derby.

De Wint was born at Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. He moved to London in 1802, and was apprenticed to John Raphael Smith, the mezzotint engraver and portrait painter. He bought his freedom from Smith in 1806, on condition that he supply eighteen oil paintings over the following two years. In 1806 he visited Lincoln for the first time, with the painter of historical subjects William Hilton, whose sister Harriet he married in 1810. He frequently visited his wife's home city of Lincoln, and many of his panoramic landscapes and haymaking scenes are set in Lincolnshire.
