Attributed to Cristóbal de Villalpando (Mexico City?, 1649 - Mexico, 1714)

      Est: €18,000 - €30,000

Attributed to Cristóbal de Villalpando (Mexico City?, 1649 - Mexico, 1714) "Education of the Virgin" Oil on canvas. 249 x 180 cm. Cristóbal de Villalpando, along with Juan Correa, was the most important artist in New Spain in the last quarter of the 17th century. He undertook two of the most significant artistic ensembles: the large allegorical canvases in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Mexico City and in the Cathedral of Puebla, where he even painted the dome. His style is very distinctive, combining an acidic and iridescent colour palette with almost metallic tones, with highly agitated folds in garments and flesh tones with bluish highlights, all imbued with a Mannerist spirit that coincidentally recalls artists from Northern Europe. His compositions are inspired by eclectic sources in line with his iconographic intention, such as prints by Rubens and Baroque models from the Iberian Peninsula, such as Carreño de Miranda and Francisco Rizzi, from whom he even created a version of a famous Immaculate Conception, adopting the rich and vibrant colour palette.

Cristóbal de Villalpando (Mexico City, c. 1649 – 1714), "Allegory of the Holy Chalice", 18th century Novohiapana colonial school, Mexico

      Est: €50,000 - €60,000

Oil on canvas: 120 x 85 cm, framed measurements: 150 x 120 cm. Cristóbal de Villalpando (Mexico City, c. 1649 - 1714) was one of the most famous painters of New Spain, whose work was produced at the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century, coinciding temporarily with Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and partially with Manuel de Sumaya. Although there is no certainty, it can be inferred that the painter was born in Mexico around 1649, thanks to a document found in a book of Spanish admonitions belonging to the tabernacle of the cathedral of Mexico, dated 1669. Cristóbal de Villalpando was overseer of the painters' guild between 1686 and 1699. In 1698 he was second lieutenant of the Halberdier Guard and promoted to captain in 1702. His death occurred in 1714, and he was buried in the church of San Agustín. Provenance: important private collection from Bilbao. Attributed to Cristóbal de Villalpando (Mexico City?, 1649 - Mexico, 1714) 'Saint John the Evangelist' Oil on canvas. 195.5 x 129 cm. Provenance: Private collection, Hillsborough, USA Cristóbal de Villalpando, along with Juan Correa, was the most important artist in New Spain in the last quarter of the 17th century. This artwork was likely to have been an altarpiece due to its large size and monumentality. It depicts Saint John writing his Gospel, specifically the beginning of chapter one of the Passion, with the description of the passage when Longinus pierces the side of Jesus Christ with a lance, and blood and water flow forth. The facial model of the saint is the same as that of the High Priest in 'The Espousal of the Virgin' in the Cathedral of Jaén (fig. 1), a theme that Villalpando addresses on other occasions, always employing the powerful model of a full beard. Also characteristic are the treatment of the folds of the mantle and the typical green and red tunic that he always has his character wear. The treatment of the leaves of the tree is also highly comparable to artworks such as 'Saint Francis Praying in the Desert' at the National Museum of Interventions in Mexico City. The panel can be dated between 1700 and 1714, a period to which the aforementioned work in the Cathedral of Jaén belongs. Colonial. Spanish Americas.

      Est: €7,000 - €8,000

CRISTOBAL DE VILLALPANDO (Mexico City, circa 1649 - 1714). "Adoration of the Magi. Oil on panel. Provenance: private collection conceived since the 1970s between London and Madrid. Measurements: 37 x 47 cm. The adoration of the magi was a common theme in painting because it expressed the universality of the Christian religion and also legitimised the figure of Jesus as king of the heavens. Aesthetically, the scene favours the representation of numerous figures, as can be seen in the present work in which the artist depicts a large procession. The right-hand area of the scene is reserved for the Holy Family, with the Child in the centre seated on Mary's knees, who tenderly holds him and presents him to one of the altarpieces. The central area is dominated by the figure of one of the kings, who acts as the starting point for a multitude of figures whose arrangement creates a vanishing point, giving great depth to the scene. Aesthetically the work shows similarities with the painting of Cristóbal Villalpando, who worked on the theme as can be seen in the painting in the Exconvent Church of Huaquechula. Cristóbal de Villalpando. He was born in Mexico City around 1649 and was overseer of the painters' guild between 1686 and 1699. Documentary sources also indicate that he was an ensign in the Guardia de Alabarderos in 1698, and was promoted to captain in 1702. His earliest known works date from 1675. This is a large series of canvases for the main altarpiece of the convent of San Marín de Tours in Huaquechula. This was followed by the altarpieces of Azcapotzalco in 1681 and Xoximilco in 1680. In 1685 he undertook his most important work, a cycle of four paintings for the cathedral of Mexico with "The Apotheosis of Saint Michael", "The Woman of the Apocalypse", "The Church Militant" and "The Church Triumphant", the latter directly indebted to Rubens. In 1688 he painted the main dome of the cathedral of Puebla and became so famous that in 1691 he was commissioned to paint 49 canvases on the life of Saint Francis for the convent of Antigua in Guatemala. A few years later, in 1695, he produced one of his best-known works, "La Plaza Mayor de México". It is precisely at this time that Villalpando reached his artistic peak, producing between 1690 and 1710 what are considered to this day to be his best works. In 1710 he produced his last series, "The Life of Saint Ignatius", for the Jesuit novitiate in Tepotzotlán. Villalpando is mainly identified today by the representation of the seven archangels in his works. In fact, they can be found in the cathedral of Mexico, interspersed with the Virtues, and also in the dome of the cathedral of Puebla and Guadalajara, as well as being present in his work "La Dolorosa". In addition to the aforementioned churches and religious centres, his works are now to be found in the Soumaya Museum in Mexico City, Corsham Court in Wiltshire (England) and in other public and private collections.
