    • Spanish or colonial school, manner of Luis de Vargas (Almendralejo, 1505?- 1567), oil on panel
      Jul. 18, 2024

Spanish or colonial school, manner of Luis de Vargas (Almendralejo, 1505?- 1567), oil on panel

      Est: €4,000 - €4,500

Oil on panel measuring 55 x 40 cm. Representing the Holy Mystery of the Immaculate Conception of Mary narrated in the Gospel of Luke in which the Angel, appearing before Mary, said to her: “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you”, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found grace before God, and you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, whom you will name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will reign in the house of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will have no end." Mary said to the angel: “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” The angel answered him and said: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you, and therefore the begotten son will be holy, he will be called the Son of God. And Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is now the sixth month since she was barren, because nothing is impossible with God. Mary said: “Behold the servant of the Lord; Let it be to me according to your word". And the angel left her. (Luke 1, 26-38). Provenance: private collection, Barcelona.

      La Virgen de la pera

      Est: -

IMPORTANT LARGE TABLE OF ANGEL NEXT TO SAINT ANNE AND SAINT JOAQUIM, IN THE MANNER OF LUIS DE VARGAS (ALMENDRALEJO, 1505-1567), SPANISH MANNERIST SCHOOL OF THE 16TH CENTURY

      Est: €35,000 - €45,000

Oil on board. Framed measurements: 175 x 122 cm, canvas measurements: 152 x 97 cm. Born in Almendralejo between 1502 and 1506, he studied alongside his father, the painter Juan de Vargas; He went to Italy very young, where, apparently, he spent most of his life and where he completed his training working in the circle of Raphael's immediate followers, among whom Perino del Vaga stands out. There he must have painted his youthful work, which has not yet been recognized, and wrote his diary in the Tuscan language to which the biographers refer and which unfortunately has not been preserved. Back in Seville, when he is about to turn 50, he works in the city and achieves great fame in his artistic circles; he died in that city in 1567, after having contributed to the renewal of Andalusian painting, by consolidating in the Sevillian school the Romanist forms introduced by the flamenco Pedro de Campaña. Francisco Pacheco, to whom his best profile is due, included in the Book of Portraits, transmitted a series of compliments about him that are not limited to the field of painting but concern the human field itself, highlighting, with fulfilled examples, his modesty and religiosity. (Almendralejo, 1505?
