Artist: ROGER DE VALERIO (1896-1951) Size: 24 1/2 x 39 1/4 in./62 x 99.6 cm Perceval, Paris "For years, the imagination of poster artists was to make use of these four elements - the sky, an airplane, the nine letters of Air France, and the 'shrimp' ... The question was henceforth one of the Air France signature, a manufacturer's brand paired with the name of the company, issuing a sole message: Air France planes leave to conquer the sky like a winged steed ... By comparing two posters by [Valerio] (see this and the subsequent Lot), we can observe all the permutations of these basic elements: the shrimp held at arm's length, inserted into the globe, or nestled into the 'C' of Air France, the airplane seen from above or below, the sky treated as clouds or blending with the sea to separate France from England ... A woman vaguely reminiscent of the Statue of Liberty symbolizes the company launched on the assault of the sky, or the shadow cast by the Eiffel Tower on the British Isles strengthens the wording of the text: London is only one hour and 30 minutes from Paris" (Air France/Dream, p. 86).
