Viola, "The Indian Legacy of Charles Bird King";Andrew J. Cosentino, "The Paintings of Charles Bird King (1785-1862), Smithsonian Institution Press, 1977Note:The subject of this watercolour is known from the lithograph published for Thomas Lorraine McKenney's (1785-1859) and James Hall's (1793-1868) masterwork book: "History of the Indian Tribes of North America with Biographical Sketches and Anecdotes of the Principal Chiefs" renowned for its faithful portraits of Native Americans. The lithographic portrait plates are based on paintings by American artist Charles Bird King (1785-1862), who was employed by the War Department to paint the Indian delegates visiting Washington, D.C., to educate the American public and to preserve them in a series of portraits. Most of the original oil portraits were painted from life in the studio of C.B. King beginning in the winter of 1822 and 1842, the rest were copied from watercolours executed in the field by young frontier artist James Otto Lewis. It is recorded that a number of period copies exist of the over 143 portraits of Indian Chiefs and elders painted by King in the form of contemporary copies made by King himself or his students, such as George Cook, and many other unidentified artists. Herman J. Viola notes that a large number of copies were painted of the Indians as copies for the Indian delegates who sat for their portrait; to fill additional orders, or for record keeping purposes. The series of portraits executed for the McKenney and Hall project provide the only record of the likenesses of many of the most prominent Indian leaders of the nineteenth century and has been described as "the most colorful portraits of Indians ever executed". Since a fire at the Smithsonian destroyed most of the paintings in 1865, the published lithographs and the contemporary copies painted by various hands, survive as our only record. "An Osage Warrior" has become one of the most recognized Indian portraits executed for the McKenney & Hall project. It's image appears on the front cover of William H. Truettner's book: "Painting Indians and Building Empires in North America, 1710-1840". Charles B. J.F. Saint-Memin's original watercolour: "An Osage Warrior" on loan from the Winterthur collection, is included in the international exhibition of historic plains Indian art: "The Plains Indians Artists of the Earth and Sky" which began at the Musee du Quai Branly in France and recently opened at the Nelson- Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City where "An Osage Warrior" occupies a full page colour illustration. It is also the subject most frequently reproduced and is subject of contemporary prints and giclee print reproductions.
