Toledo school. 16th century. Attributed to Blas de Prado (Camarena, Toledo, c. 1545 - Madrid, 1599) or Luis de Velasco (Toledo, c. 1530 - 1606) "Virgin of the Rosary, giving it to St. Dominic and St. Catherine of Siena, founders of the Dominicans". Oil on panel. 112 x 94.5 cm. As Isabel Mateo indicates, this painting shows a walled Toledo landscape in the background and the style of the figures allows us to attribute them to the above artists. The panel is accompanies by a very imposing Plateresque architectural structure in carved, gilded and polychromed wood, from the 16th century Spanish school, with a marvellous finish that depicts a female figure in the central part holding a laurel wreath arranged on a cartouche and flanked on both sides by two pilasters that each have an angel in the centre. In its upper part is a frieze decorated by a garland of birds, intertwined figures and horns of plenty. The sides and the crest at the top have a carved finish with a little angel holding drapery in its hands. The whole set rests on a cornice formed by a garland of leaves and small lion heads. It is complemented with two side columns. Its wonderful period decoration of polychrome, estofodo and gilding is. Measurements: 207 x 133 x 22 cm. We would like to thank Ms. Isabel Mateo for her help in cataloguing this painting. Medieval Art.

Circle of BLAS DE PRADO (Camarena, Toledo, around 1545- Madrid, 1599). "Saint Jerome. Oil on canvas. Relined. Frame of the XVIII century. Size: 130 x 108 cm; 140 x 120 cm (frame). In this canvas the theme of Saint Jerome penitent in the desert is approached through a scenographic and open composition, with a silver illumination that succeeds in the way of enhancing the pathos of the scene. The painting is attributed to Blas de Prado, whose work is characterised by monumental figures, skilfully modelled in contrasting light, as is the case here. The saint is depicted full-length, chiselled by chiaroscuro, with his naked torso and the muscles of his legs partially covered by the draped cloak, which has an intense crimson hue. The saint is depicted in a rocky setting, open to a nocturnal landscape with a waterfall. Next to him we see the lion, lying at his feet, the skull and a crucifix, all enveloped in a nuanced half-light. Blas de Prado was a painter of whom few biographical details are known to date. He worked mainly in Toledo, where there are a number of contracts located around the city and where contemporary sources mention him. It is also known that he worked at court, earning the esteem of Philip II. It is known that he painted portraits, Francisco Pacheco considers him to be the introducer of the still life in Spain (he was Juan Sánchez Cotán's teacher) and, as well as being familiar with Italian production through his work at El Escorial, there are those who defend the possibility of a trip to Italy that would allow him to see the works at first hand, influenced above all by Michelangelo in several of the works that have been preserved. Today his paintings can only be seen in major private collections and institutions such as the Museo del Prado in Madrid, the Museo de Santa Cruz in Toledo, Valencia Cathedral, the Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor in Talavera de la Reina (Toledo), the Palacio de Liria (Madrid), drawings in the Uffizzi Gallery in Florence, the Louvre Museum in Paris, etc.

Blas de Prado (Camarena, Toledo, 1545 - Madrid, 1599) "The return of the Holy Family from Egypt with the Baptist" Oil on panel. 54 x 39 cm. As Professor Isabel Mateo explains, the scene takes place in a clear cloudscape in which the Holy Family appears, resting, while the adolescent John the Baptist offers the Christ Child a bowl of milk soup with pieces of bread. The figure of the Virgin Mary with the Child in her arms is at the centre of the composition. Blas de Prado was one of the most important Spanish painters of his time. Although the paintings by him that are preserved are few, the praise of his contemporaries and the prestige referred to in texts bear witness to this being the case. Through the paintings known to be by him, we can see a knowledge of contemporary Italian art in his training, especially the Roman School which can be seen in the models and composition as well as a certain interest in Venetian colour, akin to that of the painters at El Escorial. He was also a pioneer in genre painting, being Sánchez Cotán’s master. Blas de Prado’s Virgin of Villegas, which is kept in the Prado, and the Miracle of Saint Leocadia in the Church of Santa María in Talavera de la Reina, Spain, are comparable to our painting. In a carved and gilded period wooden frame. On the back is a label from the Junta de Incautación, Protección y Salvamento del Tesoro Artístico (Board of Seizure, Protection and Salvage of Artistic Treasure) which notes the provenance of the painting as: Agrupación S. M. The painting comes with a certificate by Professor Isabel Mateo.
