Vincent de Pio (b. 1979) Untitled signed and dated 2008 (lower right) oil on canvas 48” x 120” (122 cm x 305 cm The value of art, aside from its aesthetic qualities, can also be seen in its ability to reflect the often complex histories, cultures, and narratives of a particular place, age, or era. In the early 1900s, when Picasso first exhibited his strikingly original cubist works, audiences were both shocked and enamored by the practice that seemingly defied the long-standing artistic canon; effectively influencing other disciplines from architecture to music. In the Philippines, one can connect the popularity of Amorsolo and his style during his heyday to the interest in depicting local idyllic scenes as a reaction to tumultuous times. But in today’s day and age, geographical limits are no longer hindrances to the development of a shared culture or identity. Communities, languages, and styles have developed throughout the world thanks to inventions such as the internet. Vincent de Pio belongs to the generation of Filipino artists who are no longer only bound by their immediate surroundings, but their access to information as a way of developing their art and adding to a revamped image of culture. De Pio’s practice is multifaceted in its adoption of different styles. From figurative art, expressionist, and realist techniques to Filipino Modernism and Japanese Pop- Culture; the artist seeks to find the new in the old and the classic in the now. Through this process de Pio, and other like minded artists, can be seen as the dawning of a new age, one that is truly connected through the power of art. (J.D.)
