    • Oil on Panel Attributed to Pereda (1611 - 1678)

Oil on Panel Attributed to Pereda (1611 - 1678)

      Est: $25,000 - $50,000

Oil on Panel Attributed to Antonio de Pereda (1611 - 1678) Overall Size: 23" x 21" Sight Size: 11.5" x 9 3/4" This is a painting of Christ on wood panel probably done by Antonio de Pereda circa 1640. The title is “Christ As The Man of Sorrows” and it may have been a preliminary work for the oil-on-canvas of the same title that now hangs in the Prado Museum in Spain. Pereda (1608 - 1678 or 1611 - 1678) was a Spanish painter of the 1600’s best known for his still lifes and religious paintings. He came from an artistic family; his father, mother and two brothers were all painters. He was educated in Madrid and taken under the protective wing of Giovanni Battista Crescenzi. After Crescenzi's death in 1635, Pereda was expelled from the Spanish court and began to take commissions from religious institutions. The painting on panel represents Christ before he was crucified, with the crown of thorns and the rope around his neck being so distinctive. The tree trunk will ultimately be his cross. The oil-on-canvas (“Cristo Varon de Dolores” in Spanish) was done by Pereda in 1641 and it’s nearly four times as big as this one on wooden panel. There are other noticeable differences between the pieces, too. The fingers on the left hand are different (the fourth finger is crooked in the oil-on-canvas), the rope is positioned a bit differently in both, the halo is larger in the oil-on-canvas, and the crown of thorns is larger and more detailed in the one at the Prado. But stylistically, the features in the panel and the oil-on-canvas seem very much alike. The hands - and especially the fingers - seem like they were done by the same person. The details in the rope - the thickness and graininess of the rope - seem very much alike, and the emotional expression on the face of Christ seems to be so much alike in both pieces. Pereda was known to have used different mediums to prepare his works - preliminary drawings, prints, books of engravings, and even plaster casts - and it’s possible that the painting on panel was done after Pereda did the one on canvas. An email from the Prado to the current owner of this work says that the piece on wooden panel “could be a later version of that work by Pereda himself …” But it’s possible that the wooden panel was rendered before the one on canvas was done, as a preliminary work for the oil on canvas. In 2018, an article written for the 200th anniversary of the Prado traced the history of how European artists made the transition from using wood panels to painting on canvas. In Spain, this transition ran from about 1620 to the 1640’s, just when Pereda was coming into his own. The wooden panel is not signed by Pereda, either (it was signed in the lower part of the tree trunk by Pereda in the oil-on-canvas), but it can clearly be attributed to him, and might have been done as a preliminary work for the piece that now hangs in the Prado. The painting was also a gift from a Spanish Ambassador to the current owner of the painting. The ambassador was a close lifelong friend of the current owner, and their friendship adds provenance to the piece. The frame is elaborate and probably done around the same time the painting was done. The construction of the frame also lends credence to the age of the painting. (You can see the construction in one of the photos of the backside of the frame.) The panel has slight paint loss at the top edge of the panel (about a quarter of an inch) and the frame has some age wear or nicks at the top or right side of the frame. There are a few wormholes on the front side of the frame, indicative of frames from that time period.
