Vintage gelatin silver prints on double-weight paper, toned France, c. 1900 Baron Adolphe de Meyer (1868-1946) – French art collector, painter and important photographer of the early 20th century Both photographs are verso signed in pencil ‘DEMEYER’ Sheet size: 17.8 x 12.3 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection Hamburg, Germany Two charming images of a young dancer; De Meyer's photographs of ballet dancers fetch over 70,000 euros at international auctions Object is regular taxed. Differential taxation is not possible. These two photographs by Baron Adolphe de Meyer were shot around 1900. They depict the same young ballet dancer wearing a gorgeous tutu and posing for the photographer in his studio. De Meyer is primarily known for his portraits of celebrities and fashion photographs but the world of ballet always fascinated him. Thus he portrayed, for instance, the most virtuoso dancers of the early 20th century, Vaslav Nijinsky, in numerous photographs. The two photographs are overall in good condition. The vertical format picture shows a minimal abrasion in raking light. There are retouchings on the negative to the girl’s armpits. The photo is taped to the mat along the upper margin. The second photo shows marginal blemishes, especially on the left edge, where the upper corner is missing and the surface is damaged. The sheet is mounted with photo corners under a mat. The verso of both photos shows traces of previous mounting, they are signed on the verso in pencil ‘DEMEYER’. The dimensions are 17.8 x 12.3 cm. The mounts measure 30 x 24 and 40 x 50 cm respectively. Adolphe de Meyer (1868-1946) Adolphe de Meyer, the son of a Parisian banker, initially took private drawing and painting lessons with Claude Monet. In the following years however, he devoted himself more and more to portrait photography. His early works were published in Alfred Stieglitz’s journal Camera Work. In 1910 he created his first fashion shots for Vogue magazine. De Meyer was a pioneer in the field of fashion photography in New York and became the first staff photographer employed by Vogue and Vanity Fair. Cecil Beaton gave him the nickname ‘the Debussy of photography’. De Meyer has inspired numerous photographers of the next generation such as the ones of Edward Steichen. Today only few of the photographer’s works are preserved for most were destroyed during the Second World War. Some of his photographs are held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as well as the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
