Ricardo de Madrazo Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1852 - d. 1917

Ricardo Federico de Madrazo y Garreta (7 February 1852 – 18 August 1917) was a Spanish painter from the Madrazo family of artists, best known for his Orientalist works. He was also the brother-in-law of the great Spanish Orientalist, Mariano Fortuny, who would be a major influence on both his life and work.

Ricardo Frederico de Madrazo y Garretta was born in Madrid[1] into a family of artists with a noble background. His grandfather was José de Madrazo, the painter and former Director of the Prado Museum; his father was Federico de Madrazo, also a painter; his uncles were Luis de Madrazo, a painter, Pedro de Madrazo, an art critic and Juan de Madrazo, an architect; while his brother was Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta, also a painter. [2] His maternal grandfather was Tadeusz Kuntze, a Polish painter. The Madrazo family have been described as one of the most important painting dynasties, who literally dominated 19th-century painting in Spain. [3]

He and his brother, Raimundo, initially studied art with their father. Later he pursued formal studies at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando with Joaquim Espalter and the sculptors Ricardo Bellver and Ponciano Ponzano.[4]

In 1866, he became friends with Marià Fortuny, who would have a major influence on his art and life. The following year, Fortuny married his sister, Cecilia de Madrazo. He accompanied the Fortuny family to Toledo, then went with him to Rome, where he studied at the Accademia Chiggi. Later, he and his brother Raimundo would work in Fortuny's studio.[5]

De Madrazo accompanied Fortuny and his family again when they moved to Paris and spent his time copying works at the Louvre and the Musée du Luxembourg. During the Franco-Prussian War, he and Raimundo returned to Spain; settling in Granada.[4] Later, he travelled to Morocco with Fortuny and Josep Tapiró, then returned to Rome. He travelled to Morocco again following Fortuny's untimely death in 1874.[6] After Fortuny's death, de Madrazo took care of his studio; cataloguing his works and arranging for an auction at the Hôtel Drouot in Paris.[7] Meanwhile, his sister, Cecilia, devoted the rest of her life to the preservation of her husband's memory. [8]

After Fortuny's death, de Madrazo moved between Paris, Madrid and Tangiers; living in Venice for a short time, marrying in 1884 and finally settling in Madrid in 1885 and using it as base to make annual trips to Paris and Venice.[4] Once established in Madrid, he began to focus on portraits, which were a Madrazo family specialty. Among those who visited him at his studio were Queen Maria Christina, the philanthropist Archer Milton Huntington, the French art collector Paul Durand-Ruel and President William Taft.[4] His knowledge of ancient art made him a sought-after adviser.

RICARDO DE MADRAZO Y GARRETA (Madrid, 1852-1917). “Magdalena”. Oil on canvas. Origin: Lauri Collection. Sold in 1936 at the Hotel de Ventes in Lille. It has a label on the back specifying the origin.

      Est: €4,000 - €4,200

RICARDO DE MADRAZO Y GARRETA (Madrid, 1852-1917). "Magdalena". Oil on canvas. Provenance: Lauri Collection. Sold in 1936 at the Hotel de Ventes in Lille. It has a label on the back specifying the provenance. Measurements: 65 x 54 cm; 87 x 76 cm (frame). The present work shows a neutral background, on which the bust of Mary Magdalene is presented, raising her gaze towards the sky, thus showing a gesture in ecstasy, sober and elegant. She appears with her hair loose, wearing a white tunic and a blue cloak in allusion to the purity and universality of the Catholic religion. Using a loose brushstroke, the artist creates an image of a sober, devotional nature, in which the protagonist is not the sitter, but her devout attitude. This type of execution makes the present work similar to others by Ricardo de Madrazo, such as "Carola", executed around 1879, which is in the collection of the Prado Museum in Madrid. In both works Ricardo depicts youth through a rapid execution with loose, vibrant glazes. Ricardo de Madrazo was the son of Federico and brother of Raimundo. He trained at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts, where his teachers, in addition to his own father, included Joaquín Espalter and the sculptors Ricardo Bellver and Ponciano Ponzano. In 1866 he met Mariano Fortuny, who was to become his brother-in-law and was to have a powerful influence on his style of painting. In 1868 he travelled with Fortuny to Rome, where he attended the Accademia Chigi. In 1869 he settled in Paris, where he had the opportunity to visit the studio of Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier. In Paris he also devoted himself to studying the great masters, whose works are preserved in the Louvre, copying numerous paintings. The Franco-Prussian War forced him to return to Spain between 1870 and 1872, and he settled in Granada with his sister and brother-in-law. The two painters took advantage of the occasion to paint a plein air in the Alhambra and the Albaicín. Many painters attended Fortuny's house, as if it were a free academy. From there they made a trip to Morocco in the company of José Tapiró and later went to Rome. The artist's life continued to be linked to that of his brother-in-law until the latter died unexpectedly in 1874 and he had to take charge of the study, cataloguing and auction of Fortuny's works at the Drouot hotel in Paris. He then spent some time in Tangiers in the company of Tapiró and alternated his stays between Paris and Madrid, taking part alternately in the National Fine Arts Exhibitions in both capitals. In 1885 he settled permanently in Madrid, travelling annually to Venice and Paris. From that year onwards, following the family tradition, he specialised in landscape and portrait painting. His Madrid studio was frequented by artists ranging from Queen María Cristina to Archer Milton Huntington, Lázaro Galdiano, Durand-Ruel and William Howard Taft, who commissioned him to paint The Parnassus. His extensive knowledge of antiquity made him a valuable artistic advisor to important Spanish and American collectors.

RICARDO DE MADRAZO Y GARRETA (Madrid, 1852-1917). "Study of a Portrait of a Young Man. Oil on canvas. Presents atelier stamp. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 51 x 40 cm; 60 x 48 cm (frame). As the rest of his family Ricardo cultivates the portrait, where he stands out for his loose but precise brushstroke. In this particular case he presents the image of a young man in profile, who seems to rest his arm on a chair, which is hidden in the composition by the body. Despite not depicting the entire face, it is notable for the fineness of the features and the treatment of the skin, which seems to absorb the light, showing lighter and darker areas that model the volume of the young man's face.
