Note: De Heem was one of the greatest painters of still lifes in the Netherlands, combining a brilliance and harmony of colour along with an accurate rendering of objects: flowers, in all their variety; European and tropical fruits; lobsters and oysters; butterflies and moths; stone and metal; snails and sea shells. The present work, finely executed and brilliantly rendered, is very much evocative of de Heem's sumptuous compositions.

STILLLEBEN MIT FRÜCHTEN UND AUSTERN Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 56 x 96 cm. Verso auf Rahmen Aufkleber, der auf Jan Davidsz de Heem (1606-1683/84) verweist. In dekorativem Rahmen. Beigegeben ein Gutachten von Liliane Huillet, 24. Januar 2023. Vor dunklem Hintergrund, auf einer großen hölzernen Platte, die größtenteils mit einem olivgrünen herabhängenden Tuch bedeckt ist, die sorgsam arrangierten Gegenstände: Linksseitig eine große flache, silberglänzende Schale mit mehreren roten und hellen Weintraubenrispen, deren Blätter leicht nach oben ragen, daneben auf einem weißen Tuch eine kleinere Schale mit geöffneten Austern, daneben zwei Zitronen mit einzelnen Scheiben, eine Melone und am rechten Rand schließlich eine abschließbare blaue Schachtel, auf der ein weiterer Teller mit roten leuchtenden Früchten steht. Über der Austernschale ist zudem noch ein kleiner Zweig mit glänzenden Kirschen erkennbar. Darstellung mit gekonnter Lichtinszenierung, bei der einzelne Früchte besonders hervorgehoben werden. JÜNGLINGSBÜSTE, UMGEBEN VON FRUCHT- UND BLUMENGEBINDEN Öl auf Leinwand. 170 x 123 cm. Das äußerst großformatige Gemälde, in betörender Qualität ausgeführt, zeigt im Zentrum der schwarzgrundigen Gesamtdarstellung eine steinerne Jünglingsbüste im Stil der Antike. Sie ist umrahmt von einem trompe-l‘oel-artig gemalten, großen barocken Steinrahmen mit ausziehenden Voluten und einem, unterhalb der Büste angemeißelten, geflügelten Engelskopf, in Art eines Epitaphs. Die Wiedergabe der Bildhauerelemente in Steingrau, leicht verschattet. Umso mehr bricht die leuchtende Farbenfülle der Frucht- und Blumengebinde hervor, die in vier größeren Partien zusammengefasst sind. Zwischen Blattwerk zeigen die einzelnen Gebinde helle Trauben, Rosen und Hibiskusblüten, daneben Nelken und entsprechendes Blattwerk. Dazwischen gebunden sind Pfirsiche, ein geöffneter Granatapfel, Zitrusfrüchte und Pflaumen, am Unterrand etliche reife Feigen. Himbeeren und leuchtend rote Kirschen fügen sich in die Farbkomposition ein, jeweils vor dem fein gemalten Blattwerk bewusst abgehoben. In der Blumenstilllebenmalerei der Zeit üblich, lassen sich auch Insekten wie Maikäfer und Schmetterling finden. Gemäß der Blumensymbolik der Zeit erscheinen die einzelnen Blüten und Früchte auf die Jugend der Knabenbüste zu verweisen, möglicherweise als eine persönliche Hommage. STILLEBEN MIT VOGELNEST Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 89 x 72 cm. Wörtliche Wiedergabe des Gemäldes von Jan Davidsz de Heem, 1606 - 1683/84 Höchst qualitätvolle Stillebenmalerei, die vor einer nur leicht beleuchteten Steinhöhle abgelegtes Obst wie Melone, Pfirsiche, hellere und dunklere Trauben zeigt. Rechts daneben ein Vogelnest mit Gelege, neben dem ein toter Vogel liegt. Darüber aufgeregt schwirrt das Vogelmännchen an einem Zweig oberhalb des aufgebauten Obstes. Dazwischen Schmetterlinge und Falter, rechts ein knorriger Baum, an dem ein Maikäfer krabbelt. Weiter hinten eine Weizenähre, deren Halm mehrfach geknickt nach unten gelegt scheint. Im Hintergrund eine conchenartige, ins Dunkel sich verlierende Höhle, vor der ein Insekt mit großen Flügeln auffliegt, links daneben ein Dornengestrüpp. Ganz offensichtlich ist das Stilleben als Memento Mori-Bild zu verstehen, im Sinne des Vanitasgedankens des 17. Jahrhunderts. Anmerkung: Das Gemälde von Jan Davidsz de Heem befindet sich in den staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister. NOTES Archduke Leopold Wilhelm (1614-1662), second son of Emperor Ferdinand II, entered Brussels as governor of the Spanish Netherlands in 1646 and resigned in 1656, when he settled in Vienna. In ten years he created one of the most important collections in Europe - the inventory of his collection made in 1659 numbered 1,397 paintings - the ample nucleus of today's Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, which he had earlier displayed in the Palais Coudenberg in Brussels. Perhaps his greatest coups as a collector were his acquisition of paintings from the collection of King Charles I, which were put up for sale following his execution in 1649, and, most importantly of all, his purchase of the bulk (some four hundred paintings) of the collection owned by the 3rd Marquess and 1st Duke of Hamilton (1606-1649), a close associate and favourite of the King, also executed in 1649. Hamilton had ended up the sole purchaser in 1638 of the collection of Bartolomeo della Nave, which in itself was one of the most important collections in Venice at the time (for a summary of the Archduke's activity as a collector, see Daz-Padron and Royo-Villanova, catalogue of the exhibition, David Teniers, Jan Brueghel y Los Gabinetes de Pinturas, Museo del Prado, 1992, pp. 32-36).

signed and dated lower center J.D.Heem Fecit 1627 oil on panel Jan Davidsz. de Heem is recognized as the most important and innovative still life painter in the Netherlands in the 17th century. No other painter of the period had such a profound influence on the development of this genre of painting. He was born in Utrecht where he spent the early part of his life before moving to Leiden; during the early 1630s, he moved to Antwerp where lived and worked for most of the remainder of his career. One of de Heem's earliest paintings, this dated work of 1627 is one of several dating from the late 1620's when de Heem was working in Utrecht and Leiden. These early paintings by de Heem clearly reflect the influence of Balthasar van der Ast, who was working in Utrecht during this period, and reflect a knowledge of the works of the Bosschaert family. In the present work, Jan Davidsz. de Heem has imitated van der Ast's bold use of the reflections and refractions of light upon pewter, glass and porcelain and has successfully depicted the fruit with the same natural modelling and soft textures. The composition, although somewhat lacking in space, derives from van der Ast's arrangements from circa 1622 and can be compared with the paintings in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge and the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen (see, E. Gemar-Koeltzsch, Holländische Stillebenmaler im 17. Jahrhundert, 1995, vol. II, pp. 45-49, nos. 8/2 & 8/7). In Fred Meijer's article on the early paintings of de Heem (see Literature below), he noted the possibility that the present painting might have been cut on the right side, knowing the composition only from a photograph. First hand inspection of the reverse of the present panel, however, which is uncradled, reveals a fairly even bevel on all sides of the panel, and it seems likely that the painting is in its original format (or very near to it), which is fairly consistent with the crowded compositions of this moment in de

Previously thought to be lost, he has pointed out that this is the original treatment of a composition known in two copies: the first, measuring 78 x 108 cm., is recorded in the 1912 catalogue of the Mus‚e des Beaux-Arts, Lyons; the second, on canvas and measuring 88 x 121 cm., was listed by Vroom as by Cornelis Cruys (private collection, Italy, formerly with D. Katz, Dieren; N.R.A. Vroom, A Modest Message as intimated by the painters of the 'Monochrome Banketje', Schiedam, 1980, II, p. 47, no. 214).
