BIOGRAPHY: Adriaan Martin de Groot was a Dutch artist who was captivated by Theodore Roosevelt during the former president's 1910 post-safari tour of Europe. According to a later article, "Whenever Colonel Roosevelt spoke in public, or appeared in a public place, Mr. de Groot was always enthusiastically present. He made many sketches on these occasions of the man he so much admired" (McClure's Magazine 51:10, October 1919, page 25). He soon emigrated to New York and became an established artist, producing several paintings of the late president from 1919 to 1925. The Library of Congress has a reproduction of a 1921 version with Roosevelt; that version offers detail in the background, and shows the Panama Canal Treaty on Roosevelt's desk. De Groot's other surviving work includes a Lincoln portrait as well as Western landscapes.
