        Charles William Day (British, active 1815-1854) A collection of twenty works on paper depicting the landscape, flora and fauna of the West Indiesvariously inscribed and annotated variously pen and black and brown ink, sepia wash and watercolour 13 x 21.5 cm (5 1/8 x 8 7/16in) and smaller. (20)mounted but unframed Provenance: The collection of the late Mrs Maureen Hanton.British born; Day was based in the West Indies from 1846-1851, travelling through Barbados, St. Vincent, Bequia, Grenada, Trinidad, St. Lucia, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Les Saintes, Dominica, Nevis, Barbuda and Antigua. During his travels he took care to document the places and people that he saw, and upon his return to England he wrote his book 'Five Years Residence in the West Indies', which was published in 1852 in two volumes by Colburn & Co., London. Some of the drawings from the collection on offer here were engraved to illustrate this book.

        Charles William Day (American, active 1815-1854). "Oxford Ness", watercolor on paper laid down on cardstock, apparently unsigned. Two small watercolor studies on one sheet, the top depicting four views of boats from various angles, the bottom depicting a calm shoreline with two lighthouses and Oxford Castle, presumably, in the distance. Each study inscribed below scene in pencil. Inscribed to older mat underneath current mat "Oxford Ness" at lower center at "P 84/2" at upper right. Verso of structure with paper label from Sabin Galleries Limited of 4 Cork Street, Bond Street W1 listing details on the work and artist. Gold tone address label to verso of structure "Bertha Lykes, Picture Stylist, 900 1st Avenue, New York, N.Y.". Framed approximately 9.375" x 12.5". Sheet size approximately 3.75" x 7.25".
