Fine Antique Oil Painting of ‘Fort Sumter' by Arthur Dawson Dawson (1858-1922) was a highly acclaimed Early Impressionist and portrait artist, art critic, and historian born in England who traveled extensively and ultimately settled in Richmond, Virginia. This antique oil on thick chamfered wooden board depiction of Fort Sumter after the U.S. Civil War titled "Water's Edge" is a haunting reminder of the Fort's famed involvement in the war and truly reflects his great impressionist-style artistic talent. It is housed and presented here in its original highly ornate and quite heavy antique wooden frame. Truly a remarkable artwork with painting and frame both in literally pristine condition ready to hang and enjoy. It measures 19 1/2" tall by 23" wide framed and the board sight size is right at 10 3/4" by 14 1/2". Truly a wonderful example of (in this case) Early American Impressionist art depicting an important historic site to boot. Note: See a copy of the 1860's photograph (which is housed at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC) in our photo grouping of the fort which shows what it looked like just after Anderson and the Federal troops evacuated. Also pictured, and accompanying the painting, is a Certificate of Appraisal & Authentication executed by Mr. Richard Carta, Jr., IAFAA (International Association of Fine Art Appraisers, NY,NY) dated August 1, 2005, reflecting his opinion of a Retail Replacement Value of the artwork at $4,900.00 at that time. Truly a quite important and collectable painting, oh, and which just happens to Display Beautifully as well! Artist Biography: Arthur Dawson was born in Crewe, England in 1858. He studied at South Kensington School, where he was a pupil of David Law (1831-1901) and William Morris (1834-1896). (Morris was paramount in the British Arts and Crafts movement known for his iconic wallpaper and textile designs. Additionally, he married Jane Burden (Morris), who was considered the embodiment of the Pre-Raphaelite ideal of beauty). Subsequently Dawson came to America in 1887 where he promptly became a U.S. Citizen and established a studio in Chicago, Illinois. Also in 1887 while in Chicago he co-founded the Chicago Society of Artists which remains active to this very day functioning magnificently as the oldest continuing artist association in the United States. Later in 1898 he moved to New York City where he focused on portrait painting and ultimately became a very highly respected art critic. Dawson was placed in charge with the massive task and responsibility of restoring the archived pictures belonging to the N.Y. Public Library and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Notably he has numerous artworks held in museums and institutional collections worldwide. Amongst his great body of lifetime work he was also highly praised for his many portrait paintings of numerous peoples including well known individuals such as U.S. Secretary John Barton Payne, General Douglas MacArthur, Nicholas Biddle, E. H. Harriman, and numerous others. In his last years he moved again and this time made Richmond, Virginia his home where he passed away at 64 years of age on Aug. 22, 1922.
