Edwin Dawes (182-1945) American, Fall Landscape Oil on Canvas

    Est: $300 - $600

Edwin Dawes (182-1945) American, Fall Landscape Oil Painting. Signed, lower right.    Edwin Minot Dawes, born in 1872, was a self-taught American painter who initially worked in sign painting and the baking powder business. Inspired by the Walker Gallery in Minneapolis around 1900, he dedicated himself to painting, developing a tonalist style and later incorporating impressionistic elements. He gained recognition for works like "Burning Leaves" and "September Morning" in the early 1900s.   Dawes became active in the Minneapolis art community, receiving commissions and exhibiting his work. He was influenced by artists like William Lathrop and Edward Redfield, leading to a brighter palette and bolder brushwork. His painting "Channel to the Mills" won a gold medal in 1913.   Later, Dawes moved to New York and then to Nevada, where he purchased a mining company, diverting his focus from painting. In his later years, he moved to California, adopting a broader style, but his later work was considered less charming. After his wife's death, he returned to painting but struggled to regain his earlier success. He died in 1945, remembered more for his mining ventures than his art.   Overall Size: 26 x 30 in.  Sight Size: 19 1/2 x 23 1/2 in. #9113

  • Edwin Dawes California Landscape Oil on Canvas

Edwin Dawes California Landscape Oil on Canvas

    Est: $1,000 - $1,200

Edwin Dawes (1872-1945). Oil on canvas depicting a California landscape with a grove of trees in front of the mountains. Signed along the lower right. Edwin Dawes was born in Boone, Iowa on April 27, 1872. In 1893 he moved to Denver, Colorado, where he worked making signs for windows. Dawes briefly returned to Iowa and then left for Minneapolis to join his father and brother to work in a manufacturing business. While in Minneapolis, Edwin continued to paint signs and letters for windows. Edwin Dawes drew his inspiration for art from a visit to the Walker Gallery, now called the Walker Art Center. He was never formally trained as an artist, so he just painted in his free time. A well known art dealer from Chicago named J.W. Young saw a painting by him hanging in a store window and was amazed at the quality of the work. His work was shown to another artist, Nicholas Richard Brewer, who also agreed that the work was of high quality. In 1908, Dawes had his first public exhibition. He went on to receive an Honorable Mention for his painting "September Morning." Dawes began to devote the majority of his time to painting and became active in the community. He was the treasurer of the Attic Club of Minneapolis and was commissioned to paint Glacier National Park by Louis Hill in 1911. In 1912, Dawes lived in the art community of New Hope, Pennsylvania and would paint with William Lathrop. While in New Hope, Dawes met the artists Charles Rosen and Edward Redfield. He traveled to New York during this time to expose himself to the wide array of museums and galleries. In 1913, Dawes unveiled his most famous painting, "Channel to the Mills," at the Minnesota State Art Society. He received a gold medal for his masterpiece and it currently hangs in the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Another work titled "Willows in Spring" was a part of the annual exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago. Edwin Dawes moved to California and established a studio in Glendale, near Los Angeles. This period marked a time when he created beautifully colorful impressionist landscapes that captured the beauty and light of California. Height: 20 1/4 in x width: 24 in.

Edwin M. Dawes, American, 1872-1945, "Lake Tahoe", oil on panel, signed

    Est: $800 - $1,200

Edwin Munot Dawes, American, 1872-1945, California, Nevada, Minnesota, Iowa Rural landscape and urban views “Lake Tahoe” Signed lower left Bordering California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is in the Sierra Nevada. It is the second deepest lake in the United States. For Dawe’s depiction of the lake, he utilized short, staccato strokes of vibrant paint hues. The painting exhibits intense strokes of colors that texturize the surface of the painting, mirroring the beautiful ruggedness one experiences in nature. The painting is especially vivid in person, with specks of contrasting colors peeking from below in an Impressionist manner. Dawes likely painted this artwork while he owned a mining company by 1918 in Lovelock, Nevada, two hours Northeast of the lake. Earlier on, Dawes adopted painting as a career after visiting the Walker Gallery (Walker Art Center) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He painted throughout his lifetime and returned to the profession full-time later in life as well.
