  • George Dawe,  A pair of portraits: Ebenezer Fuller Maitland Bethia Fuller Maitland (née Ellis) and their son William
    Mar. 12, 2025

George Dawe,  A pair of portraits: Ebenezer Fuller Maitland Bethia Fuller Maitland (née Ellis) and their son William

    Est: £10,000 - £15,000

George Dawe,  British 1781-1829-  A pair of portraits: Ebenezer Fuller Maitland; Bethia Fuller Maitland (née Ellis) and their son William;  oils on canvas, each 238 x 147.5 cm., a pair (2).  Provenance:  The sitters, and thence by descent.  Exhibited:  London, Royal Academy of Art, 1817, no.247 (Mrs Fuller Maitland and her son).  Note:  Ebenezer Fuller Maitland FRS (1780-1858) was an English landowner and politician. He was the only son of Ebenezer Maitland, a London businessman and Bank of England director, and his wife Mary. In 1807, he changed his name to Ebenezer Fuller Maitland in accordance with the bequest of his wife's unmarried aunt, Sarah Fuller, who left him her fortune in 1810. In 1804, Maitland served as a lieutenant-colonel in the Reading Volunteers. He was elected Member of Parliament for Lostwithiel in 1807, for Wallingford in 1812, and for Chippenham in 1826, holding the latter seat until 1830. He was Sheriff of Berkshire in 1825–26, Sheriff of Breconshire in 1831-32, a director of the South Sea Company from 1815 until his death, and in 1829 was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.  Ebenezer's wife Bethia (1781-1865) was heiress to the banker William Fuller, said to be one of the richest men in England. They had twelve children, of whom four sons and four daughters married. His eldest surviving son and heir was William Fuller Maitland (1813-1876), shown here as the little boy. William was an avid picture collector who journeyed frequently to Italy, where he encountered the works of the early Italian masters, whose paintings, alongside English landscapes, formed the basis of a major part of his collection. From the time of his first marriage in 1842 until his death, he lived at Stansted Hall in Essex. He was father to the MP and cricketer William Fuller-Maitland (1813-1876).  As well as two large London houses, Ebenezer and Bethia owned country estates at Shinfield Park and Park Place in Berkshire, Stansted Hall at Stansted Mountfichet in Essex, Garth near Builth Wells in Breconshire, and High Barcaple in Kirkcudbrightshire. The portrait of Bethia and William shows Park Place in the left background. At the time of painting in c.1816, Park Place in fact belonged to Ebenezer's cousin Henry Piper Sperling, who had recently purchased the property at auction, and who in 1824 swapped it for Ebenezer's estate Norbury Park in Surrey. When Fuller Maitland died in 1858, Queen Victoria visited Park Place with the intention of purchasing the estate for the Prince of Wales. Ebenezer's wife in fact remained in the house until her death when their son William took over ownership. An attempt to sell by auction was made in 1866, but the eventual sale took place in 1867, to Charles Easton of Whiteknights, Reading – a speculator, purchased with the intention of dividing the then 800-acre estate. In 2012, it was sold to Russian businessman Andrey Borodin for a record £140 million, making it the hitherto most expensive house sale in the United Kingdom.

  • Portrait of Leopold I, King of Belgium, 1810-1815 by George Dawe (1781-1829)
    Mar. 09, 2025

Portrait of Leopold I, King of Belgium, 1810-1815 by George Dawe (1781-1829)

    Est: $160,000 - $320,000

Portrait of Leopold I, King of Belgium, 1810-1815 by George Dawe. This is a very rare and unique portrait of Leopold I, King of Belgium (1790-1865), in his young age: 20-25 years of old. Presumably, the year when the portrait was painted in 1810-1815, the time of Napoleon invasion of Europe and Russia. BIOGRAPHY: Leopold I (French: Léopold; 16 December 1790 – 10 December 1865) was the first King of the Belgians, reigning from 21 July 1831 until his death in 1865. The youngest son of Francis, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, Leopold took a commission in the Imperial Russian Army and fought against Napoleon after French troops overran Saxe-Coburg during the Napoleonic Wars. After Napoleon's defeat, Leopold moved to the United Kingdom, where in 1816 he married Princess Charlotte of Wales, the only child of the Prince Regent (the future King George IV). Leopold and Charlotte's marriage was happy, but it ended after a year and a half, when Charlotte died after delivering a stillborn son. Leopold continued to enjoy considerable status in Britain. DESCRIPTION: Size of the frame: 29 in. x 25 in. = 72.5 cm x 62.5 cm; Size of the stretcher: 24 x 20 in. = 60 cm x 50 cm; Weight of the frame: 15 lb. = 6.75 kg; Condition: Fine, normal age wear, no defects; This painting was not signed, but 20% of Dawe’s paintings were not signed. BIOGRAPHY of the ARTIST: George Dawe (1781-1829) England - highest possibility. The portrait was not signed, but after meticulous research, we came to conclusion that the artist was George Dawe. His painting of classical subjects won much praise and were the making of his early reputation, but he was more interested in financial success and sought portraiture commissions, which were lucrative and which brought him into contact with high society. However, the direct way in which he promoted his own work was not approved of by artistic society and brought considerable criticism from his contemporaries, one of whom was John Constable, who painted a background for a Dawe portrait on at least one occasion. He enjoyed the patronage of the Duke and Duchess of Kent and also that of Princess Charlotte and Prince Leopold. Confusing messages on the portrait: In the right upper corner there is a confusing message in a light oil paint, in English: “Thomas Picton General Served in Paris(?) when ______(?) under the Duke of Wellington, Killed in action Waterloo ____________and ____ tranche ___Cavalry 1815”. This is a completely wrong message. Computer Face Recognition Analysis excluded this possibility. Is the painting of King Leopold? -True. Similarity score with King Leopold: 0.4921005584814231. Is the painting of General Murat? -False. Similarity score with General Murat: 0.7805936981139793. TEST B: Compare the painting to portrait of Thomas Picton and the portrait of General Murat. Is the painting of Thomas Picton? -False. Similarity score with Thomas Picton: 0.6722433957862264 (younger portrait). Similarity score with Thomas Picton: 0.7660791676968941 (older portrait). OTHER PORTRAITS of KING Leopold: There are few portraits of king Leopold I, in England (National Portrait Gallery, London) and Belgium (Royal Museum of Fine Arts /Old Master’s Museum, Brussels), by George Dawe, but they are either in older age Leopold I, or prints, or copies of the copies. By the way, King Leopold on the similar portraits was dressed in the same red dress uniform, same decorated collar, and was wearing the same Cross of Honor and other orders, as on his young portrait. Auction sales results of George Dawe paintings in the last 20 years: 1. 11-28-2006 - Portrait of tsar Alexander I, 34x24 inches, oil - Estimate: 250,000 GBP=$324,500 USD, Unsold, Sotheby's London; 2. 11-30-2005 - Portrait of Nicholas I on horseback, 48 x 38 inches, oil, Estimate: - 90,000 GBP = $116,820 USD, Unsold, Christie's, London. 3. 11-29-2006 - Portrait of Grand Duke Nicholas on horseback, 48 x 38 inches, oil, -Sold for 108 000 GBP = $140,184 USD, Christie's, London. 4. 06-04-2013 - Portrait of tsar Alexander I, 35 x2 3 inches, oil, -Sold for 134,500 GBP = $174,581 USD, Sotheby's, London. In 10-20 years the prices went up because of inflation. So, our estimate of Leopold I portrait painting is $200,000 - $400,000 USD. Provenance: This painting was purchased by American officer after the Second World War II, in 1945, in Paris, France. Then it was brought to USA and kept for decades as an estate collection in USA. In 1980’s-1990’s, the owners moved to Florida. In 2009 their grandchildren brought the portrait to antique store in St. Petersburg in Florida, USA.

Version 1. This is a portrait of King Leopold I, King of Belgians, by George Dawe. Leopold I (Leopold Georges Chretien Frederic; German: Leopold Georg Christian Friedrich; 16 December 1790 - 10 December 1865) was from 21 July 1831 the first King of the Belgians, following Belgium's independence from the Netherlands. He was the founder of the Belgian line of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. His children included Leopold II of Belgium and Carlota of Mexico, Empress-Consort of Maximilian I of Mexico. He was a maternal uncle and adviser of Queen Victoria. He was born in Coburg and died in Laeken. By birth, he was a Prince of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, later a Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Duke of Saxony. Leopold was the youngest son of Francis, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, and Countess Augusta Reuss-Ebersdorf, and later became a prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha after Saxe-Coburg acquired Gotha from Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg in 1826 and yielded Saalfeld to Saxe-Meiningen. In 1795, as a mere child, Leopold was appointed colonel of the Izmaylovsky Guards Regiment in Russia. Seven years later, he became a major general. When Napoleonic troops occupied the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg in 1806 Leopold went to Paris. Emperor Napoleon I offered him the position of adjutant, but he refused. Instead, he took up a military career in the Imperial Russian Cavalry. He campaigned against Napoleon and distinguished himself at the Battle of Kulm at the head of his cuirassier division. In 1815, at the age of 25, Leopold reached the rank of lieutenant general in the Imperial Russian Army. Version II. This is a portrait of British General Thomas Picton. Discussion: The portrait was probably made in his younger years. Biography of Thomas Picton: Picton was the younger son of Thomas Picton, and was born in Poyston, Pembrokeshire, Wales. In 1771 he obtained an ensign's commission in the 12th Regiment of Foot, but he did not join until two years later. The regiment was then stationed at Gibraltar, where he remained until he was made captain in the 75th in January 1778, at which point he then returned to Britain. The regiment was disbanded five years later, and Picton quelled a mutiny amongst the men by his prompt personal action and courage, and was promised the rank of major as a reward. He did not receive it, and after living in retirement on his father's estate for nearly twelve years, he went out to the West Indies in 1794 on the strength of a slight acquaintance with Sir John Vaughan, the commander-in-chief, who made him his aide-de-camp and gave him a captaincy in the 17th foot. Shortly afterwards he was promoted major in the 58th foot. GEORGE DAWE (ENGLISH 1781-1829) Princess Charlotte, 1818 oil on canvas 140 x 110 cm (55 x 43 1/4 in.) signed and dated G DAWE R.A PINXIT/1818 PROVENANCE Acquired from the summer residence of the King of Hannover, Castle Herrenhauser, with partial inventory label on stretcher, and collection stamp on the canvas verso EAFC [Familien Fideicommiss Seiner Majestaet des hochseligen Koenigs Ernst August von Hannover. 1836.1843] Sotheby's, Munich, Works of Art from the Royal House of Hanover, October 6, 2005, Lot 588 EXHIBITED Annual Exhibition of the Royal Academy, London, 1818 (No. 42, Her Late Royal Highness Princess Charlotte) This portrait of Princess Charlotte Augusta was painted in 1818, shortly after the tragic death of the young Princess (1796-1817). Apart from being an exceptionally visually appealing early 19th century portrait painting with both a Royal sitter and a Royal provenance, the present lot is quite historically significant. It is difficult to overestimate the effect that the untimely death of the Princess Charlotte of Wales had on the people of Great Britain. The closest event in recent memory to which one could compare it, would be the death of Princess Diana in our time. After Charlotte's death, the entire country went into mourning, with shops closing for two weeks, and even the Exchange and Law Courts closing, amongst other institutions. George Dawe was a favored English portraitist of high society. An Academician at the Royal Academy of the Arts, his patrons included the Duke and Duchess of Kent, as well as Princess Charlotte and Prince Leopold. This painting, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1818, was consequently a reverent and exquisite homage to the Princess by one of her own favorite painters. One can certainly imagine the emotions that this portrait stirred in its viewers, painted as it is with an ethereal but still vital quality, with the beautiful beloved Princess surrounded by the heavens. George Dawe is a very well known artist in Russia. This is thanks to the Duke of Kent, with whom he toured through Europe in 1819 shortly after exhibiting this painting at the Royal Academy. As a result of his tour, he was commissioned by Tsar Alexander I to paint 329 portraits of the Russian officers who defeated Napoleon, which form the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. Indeed, Dawe lived in St. Petersburg from 1822-28, working on the commission, and in 1828 was even appointed First Portrait Painter of the Imperial Court.

PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION, ENGLAND PORTRAIT OF TSAR ALEXANDER I IN THE UNIFORM OF THE PREOBRAZHENSKY GUARDS 87.5 by 61cm., 34¼ by 24in. signed in Latin l.r. and dated St. Petersburg 1826; inscribed on reverse Moberly / Petersburg 1826; further stamped with Moberly arms on reverse of canvas oil on canvas PROVENANCE Presented by Tsar Nicholas I to Charles Moberly in St. Petersburg 1826; Thence by descent; Phillip's London, Early British and Victorian Paintings, 3 June 1997, Lot 52 NOTE In 1818 Alexander I invited the British artist George Dawe RA, portraitist to the Duke of Kent and main rival of Sir Thomas Lawrence, to Russia to create what is now the War Gallery in the Winter Palace. Over the course of ten years in St Petersburg, he and his assistants Poliakov and Vassily Golike painted over 300 portraits in celebration of the generals who achieved victory in the 1812 Patriotic War. Dawe thus established for himself a glittering and extremely successful career in Russia. He was elected an honorary member of the Imperial Academy of Arts, and created First Portrait Painter to the Russian Court by the Tsar. He established a large and productive studio in the Russian capital, where Russian and British assistants helped him with numerous high society commissions. He earned Pushkin's praise, and the poet dedicated one of his works to the British artist. Dawe was also a favourite of Alexander I who gave him a large studio in the Imperial Winter Palace, and paid him generously for his work. In spring 1823 Dawe wrote with evident joy and pride to a London friend, The Emperor has given me a sitting about a week ago. He will give me as many as I require and I fancy I shall make a very successful picture... One of these 'successful pictures', showing the Emperor full-length in Life Guards' uniform with Russian and foreign decorations and cocked hat in hand, was sent to London to Lord Londonderry in 1824. It was this portrait, engraved by Thomas Wright and published in London in 1826 that became the iconic image of the Russian Tsar. Dawe was officially given the exclusive right to make and license copies of this portrait, thus the only authorized versions were produced by Dawe himself in his St. Petersburg studio. A few full-length portraits of the same type are now kept in famous collections in Russia. One larger than life size version can be seen in the Alexander Room of the Hermitage (inv no 4467) and another, dated 1825, in The State Russian Museum (inv no 3922). A third from 1826 is part of the Royal collection in England (No 746). Similar portraits of Alexander I painted in the small format often preferred by Dawe, dated between 1825 and 1828 are now in royal collections in Britain (No.745) and the Netherlands (inv no IB 46722), in the Wellington Museum, London (dated 1825, 80 by 56.5cm), in the vaults of The State Museum at Peterhof (inv no 755). This very familiar official image of the Emperor was reproduced on porcelain, jewelry, in miniatures and in the engraving by Wright and Bennet depicting Alexander I visiting George Dawe's studio in the Winter Palace. After the death of Alexander I, Nicholas I commissioned a number of high quality official portraits of his brother to present to royal relatives and foreign diplomats in memory of the deceased Emperor. The offered lot was given to the British diplomat Charles Moberly in 1826 and bears a seal with the Moberly arms on the reverse (fig.1). His connection to George Dawe was reinforced when Moberly, as Acting Counsel General in St. Petersburg, was responsible for the legal formalities of finalising the portraitist's estate in the early 1830s. By keeping the correspondence with Dawe's relatives and lawyers, Charles Moberly did a great deal to preserve the artist's legacy. We are very grateful to Dr. Galina Andreeva for her help in cataloguing this lot.
