§ Francis Davison (British 1919-1984) Cottage in a Field coloured paper collage 43 x 56cm Provenance: Sale; Sotheby's, 8 October 2008, lot 152 Footnote: Formerly a painter associated with the St Ives set such as Heron, Nicholson and Scott, by 1952, Francis Davison, no doubt influenced by his wife, Margaret Mellis, had completely abandoned representational painting in favour of the abstract paper collages he is famed for today. One of four children adopted by millionaire couple, George and Joan Davison, Francis Davison spent his childhood in Cannes before moving to Essex in 1932, to attend St George’s boarding school where he met his lifelong friend and colleague, Patrick Heron. Despite reading English and Anthropology at St Catherine's, Cambridge, Davison aspired to become a poet. However, after relocating to St Ives and meeting Mellis in 1946, Davison discovered a love of painting. Mellis later recalled: ‘he only started painting because I did, I was always painting. I had the influence on him. In fact, I brought him up. Then he got frightfully good and went right past.’ Davison’s early career was marred by a resounding failure to attract any critical or financial success, rather, his main income stream was generated by selling eggs from the pair’s smallholding. Davison’s pivot towards collage was, therefore, logical not only artistically, but also practically, as the production of such works was considerably cheaper than working in oils. Although Davison’s career was spent in relative obscurity, achieving only limited success during the 1970s and 1980s, since his death, in 1984, his work has received widespread recognition and has been the subject of several critically acclaimed retrospectives.

Francis Davison (British 1919-1984) "Barn and Millstone"

    Est: £3,000 - £5,000

Francis Davison (British 1919-1984) "Barn and Millstone" Unsigned, circa.1950-51, estate stamped and referenced (0-42) on verso, with original receipt of purchase from 'Andrew D'Arcy Fine Art', oil on board. Footnote: * Francis Davison spent his childhood in Cannes, the adopted son of George and Joan Davison, who had made their fortune through the Eastman Kodak company. He was sent to boarding school in England, where he met Patrick Heron, who became a life-long friend. Following the Second World War, he moved to St. Ives where Heron introduced him to Margaret Mellis, who later became his wife. Together they moved to London, and then the South of France, where he first started to paint and draw, inspired by the landscape surrounding the family property. They returned to England in 1950, settling in Suffolk and establishing a farm. In 1952, Davison started making collages, using torn paper, and a stark colour palette. He only started to receive recognition for his work in the late 1970s, with inclusion in some high-profile exhibitions. His popularity and renown has increased since his death, with several exhibitions and an acknowledgment of him as an inspiration from Damien Hirst. Artists? Resale Right (?droit de suite?) may apply to this lot.

§ Francis Davison (British, 1919-1984) Yellow, red, blue with two black strips collage h:104 w:94 cm Provenance: Kettle's Yard, Cambridge. Exhibited: Francis Davison Exhibition, Kettle's Yard, Cambridge, "Collages and Early Works", 24 November 2007-20 January 2008. Literature: Redfern Catalogue No. 9. Francis Davison was born in London in 1919, and then grew up in a chateau in the South of France after his adoption by a wealthy family. He intended to become a poet after reading English at Cambridge University. In 1946 he met Patrick Heron and Margaret Mellis (later to be his wife), both artists. Francis Davison discovered a love for collage - he never added pigments, but used the colours of the paper and the remains of previously glued, torn-off sheets. He increasingly recycled old collages, working incessantly, in his small studio, adding colour and increasing size.
