        Davis (Richard Barrett) Hunters Annual, no.1 only, first edition, 4 hand-coloured lithograph plates by J.W. Giles after R.B. Davis, all on India paper, one uncoloured lithograph key plate, 2ff. letterpress, some foxing, loose as issued in original printed red wrappers with large lithograph illustration to upper cover, covers with slight creasing and some chips/tears at extremities, in modern morocco-backed cloth portfolio, [Bobins 773; Schwerdt I, pp.258/259], folio, 1836. *** Rare in the original pictorial wrappers. Schwerdt had 2 copies of this the first of 4 parts (the last of which was published in 1841 and was not seen by Schwerdt or Siltzer), one coloured but in later wrappers, one uncoloured in these pictorial wrappers. "R.B. Davis lived at Windsor and [that], although he did not often hunt himself, he inherited a love of the sport from his father Richard Davis, who was huntsman to the harriers of George III." (Schwerdt). The text leaves give brief accounts of four of the most celebrated hunts - Royal, Belvoir, Melton Mowbray and Bramshill.

A large and exemplary antique equestrian engraving, featuring an Early Victorian hunting landscape scene with rider on horseback and a profusion of hounds to foreground, with additional human and equestrian figures and a Georgian manor house to the background. Legend below image with dedication to THO[MAS] TYRNHIT DRAKE ESQ., from the artist, Davis, who was the royally appointed animal painter to King George IV, King William IV, and Queen Victoria; he exhibited at the Royal Academy for 50 years beginning in 1802. Presented in a decorative matte. Good overall condition with some wear to frame. Measures 22 3/4 in. x 26 1/2 in. (sight), 32 1/2 in. x 36 1/2 in. (framed). Hill Auction Gallery will not ship. He exhibited at the Royal Academy for 50 years beginning in 1802. His paintings are in the collections of British National Museums.

Provenance: Vicar Brothers, London Christie's New York, Important British and American Sporting Paintings, June 8, 1984 The historic Donnybrook Fair was founded in 1204 by a royal charter of King John. Held in late August to mid-September, the fair became one of Ireland's principal markets. Today's dictionaries define donnybrook as a free-for-all or brawl owing to the "rough merriment" for which the fair came to be known. The fair was abolished in 1868.
