Davis (1821-1855) was a prolific portrait painter born in Warwick, Rhode Island. Like many women at the time, Jane Anthony Davis used her initials. The use of initials to indicate the artist’s name was a common practice among women artists of the 19th century. There are close to 150 documented works by Davis; primarily miniatures and watercolors. She appears to have worked in south-central New Hampshire, northeastern Massachusetts, eastern Connecticut, and particularly in Rhode Island. Several of her known subjects are from Rhode Island and appear in historical records documenting their ties to the state.
