          * George Horace Davis [1881-1963]- Two charioteers in an open submersible or 'Human Torepedo':- pen and ink with wash signed lower right 33cm x 46.5cm *Biography- George Horace Davis was born in Kensington and studied at both the Kensington Park College and the Ealing School of Art. Serving in the Royal Flying Corp in WWI he used his flying experience to produce aerial combat drawings, the first of which were published in The Sphere. He is perhaps best known for his considerable work as an illustrator for the Illustrated London News and in particular for his highly detailed and accurate 'cutaway' drawings. He is the younger brother of Sir Robert H Davis (1879-1965) who was managing Director of Siebe Gorman. * see page 204, vol 2, 'Diving Helmets and Equipment Through The Ages'.

          GEORGE HORACE DAVIS (1881-1963) HOLLAND AMERICA LINE / SOUTHAMPTON TO NEW YORK / [STATENDAM.] Circa 1930. 39 1/2x25 inches, 100 1/4x63 1/2 cm. Eyre & Spottiswoode, Ltd., London. Condition A: minor abrasions in image. The Statendam, whose maiden voyage was scheduled for 1924, was delayed by construction problems until April 11, 1929. Known as "the Queen of the Spotless Fleet," she served the Holland America Line until 1940, when she was destroyed during World War II. Davis specialized in technical drawings, often illustrating cutaways for the London Illustrated News for whom he started working in 1923. In addition to his "diagrammatic illustrations," he also painted scenes of air combat and worked for different shipping lines including Cunard White Star and Holland America.
