Exquisite signed ink sketch of a bull accomplished by Pablo Picasso on the reverse of a 6 x 4 postcard depicting horses in Provence et Camargue, boldly titled and signed in ink, "20.10.1957, Man v. Toro, Picasso,” playing off the name of the recipient, the important Dada/Surrealist photographer Man Ray. Also signed in ink by Jacqueline Roque (his second wife), Eduoard Pignon (French artist), Hélène Parmelin (French journalist), Roland (likely artist and art collector Roland Penrose), and one other. Addressed to Man Ray at his studio, "2 bis Rue Ferou, Paris." In fine condition, with a small stain touching the date. With a wonderful sketch of a bull—a frequent subject in Picasso's works, including the iconic 'Guernica'—this is a quintessential Picasso autograph, sent to an important visual artist. The two had a long association, with Man Ray making several portraits of Picasso during the 1920s and 1930s. A simply marvelous modern art piece.

Overall in good condition: pages slightly yellow. *Dada or Dadaism is an avant-garde artistic-cultural movement founded in Zurich in 1916, active until 1923. Other Dada activity centers were Berlin, Hannover, Paris, Cologne and New York. Complete chess set with 32 carved solid beech wood pieces in original Lucite box with black case USA, 1971 After Man Ray (1890-1976) - American photographer and painter influential to the Dada and Surrealist movements Reproduced for the Metropolitan Museum of Art by sculptor Nikolai Nikolov based on the original 1920 design Accompanied by black and white photograph detailing intended arrangement, with ink stamp verso 'MM48916' Overall dimensions: 7 x 11 ½ x 4 in. (7 x 29.2 x 10.2 cm.) Very good condition This chess set, published in 1971 by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, was created from designs by Man Ray and carved by Nicolai Nicolov. Having been inspired by his life-long friend and avid chess player, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray created the design in 1920. The geometric forms are translated into the pieces of a chess board giving a surrealist nature to the common elements of the game. This complete chess set with thirty-two carved solid beech wood pieces is in the original Lucite box with black case. It was reproduced for the Metropolitan Museum of Art based on Man Ray's original 1920 design. It is accompanied by a black and white photograph detailing the intended storage arrangement. The overall dimensions of the Lucite box are 7 x 11 ½ x 4 inches. Slight wear to black case, otherwise overall good condition. Man Ray (American, 1890-1976) Born Emmanuel Radnitzky in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Man Ray and his family moved to New York in 1912. Ray began his art studies in high school while educating himself at museums and galleries, with particularly reference to Alfred Stieglitz. After graduating in 1909, he worked as a commercial artist and technical illustrator until he enrolled in the formative Ferrer School in 1912. He had his first solo exhibition in 1915 while part of an art colony in Ridgefield, New Jersey. He then stylistically transitioned to the Dada movement, making mechanically produced images and "readymades" in the manner of his friend, Marcel Duchamp. In 1921, Ray moved to the renowned Montparnasse quarter of Paris and became a notable photographer. He exhibited with the first Surrealist show at the Galerie Pierre in 1925. Importantly, Ray experimented with solarization and created photograms, which he named "rayographs." After directing several avant-garde films, Ray relocated to Los Angeles from 1940 to 1951 due to the Second World War. His works can be found in institutions like the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the J. Paul Getty Museum.
