3 Harold Davies Expressionist Works on Paper, Framed

Three (3) Harold Christopher Davies (Virginia/Alabama/New York/California, 1891-1976) watercolor paintings. 1st item: Watercolor and chalk expressionist landscape painting with waterfall and rocks rendered primarily in blue and purple. With "HD" blind stamp, lower right. With Hoover Gallery, San Francisco label and stamps to backing. Housed under plexiglass in a modern, painted wood frame with ivory textile mat and silver reveal. Sight: 11 11/16" H x 14 7/16" W. Frame: 20 3/16" H x 22 1/2" W. 2nd item: Abstract Expressionist pencil, ink, and watercolor painting in black and yellow. Initialed in pencil and inscribed "September 1954 NYC," lower margin. With Hoover Gallery, San Francisco label and stamp to backing. Housed under plexiglass in a metallic frame with ivory mat and French line. 3rd item: Abstract Expressionist ink and watercolor painting in red and black. Initialed in pencil within the image, lower right, and inscribed "June 1954," lower right margin. With Hoover Gallery, San Francisco label and stamp to backing. Housed under plexiglass in a metallic frame with ivory mat and French line. Biographical Note: "Born in Seattle, Washington on May 26, 1891, the Davies family moved to a farm near Cherrydale, Virginia when Harold was an infant. Artistically inclined at an early age, he began to study art at age 14 at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. In 1909 he moved to Fresno, California where he worked as a clerk for the San Joaquin Power & Light Company. Davies further studied at the San Francisco Institute of Art. By 1921 he had moved to Oakland where he became president of California Spray Chemical Company. A busy executive, he painted in his leisure time. He lived in Huntsville, Alabama during 1945-57 and in Long Island, New York until 1969. Retiring to California, he had a home and studio in Inverness on Tomales Bay until his death on May 29, 1976. An Abstract Expressionist, his works are similar to those of De Kooning and Hofmann." (Source askART)
