              A rare Great War campaign group of three awarded to Captain A. W. A. Davies, Royal Army Medical Corps, late Uganda Railway Volunteers, Mombasa Marine Defence, who served as a Dresser, H.M. Hospital Ship Goorkha , attached Indian Medical Service, was wounded, and was awarded a Silver War Badge 1914-15 Star (Dresser A. W. A. Davies.); British War and Victory Medals (Capt. A. W. A. Davies.) nearly extremely fine, the first rare to rank (3) £300-£400 --- Albert William Abell Davies was born in Aldsworth, Gloucestershire, on 20 May 1890 and was educated at the University of London, before completing his medical training at Guy’s Hospital. A member of the Uganda Railway Volunteers, Mombasa Marine Defence, he served during the Great War initially as a Dresser in H.M. Hospital Ship Goorkha as part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force from 19 May 1915, before being commissioned Lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps on 24 November 1916. Promoted Captain on 24 November 1917, he was subsequently wounded (University of London O.T.C. Roll refers), and was awarded a Silver War Badge, No. 451,961. He died in Sanderstead, Surrey, on 23 July 1960. Sold with copied research, including the 1914-15 Star roll extract for H.S. DAVIES DSO DFC RAFVR, contained in its original box of issue with pin backed ribbon, ink named to the inside of the lid DAVIES, two newspaper cuttings enclosed one detailing the award of DSO for attacks on Berlin during the Second World War. Davies' service during the Second World War was with Bomber Command and included many sorties over Germany and attacks on the Scharnhorst and the Gneisenau.

Davies (1570-1652) was an eminent poet, lawyer and political writer. In 1603 he was sent to Ireland as solicitor-general and soon was promoted to Attorney-general and one of the justices of assizes. This work was the result of a judicial circuit round Ireland and on his return to England he wrote an account to the King. He was appointed Lord Chief Justice of England but died shortly afterwards. Provenance: Charles Hughes (bookplate).

In 1632 he published a Welsh-Latin dictionary, Antiquae linguae Britannicae ... dictionarium duplex. Davies wrote the Welsh-Latin section of the dictionary himself, and used Thomas Wiliems's work for the Latin-Welsh sections, abridged and revised. His dictionary was subsequently used and cited as an authority in the English dictionaries of Thomas Blount (1656) and Edward Philips (1658), and Dr Johnson had a copy of the Dictionarium duplex in his library." - Oxford DNB.
