Wicklow, Lilian Davidson studied at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art where she won prizes in 1895 and 1896. In 1897 she won the RDS Scholarship which carried a free studentship - it didnÕt come too soon as that was the year of her fatherÕs death. She began exhibiting at the RHA in 1914 and did so virtually every year until her death in 1954. When in Dublin she taught painting privately in her studio in Earlsfort Terrace. She travelled extensively and did so for most of her life, painting landscapes in Belgium and Switzerland and in various parts of Ireland. She exhibited regularly at the Watercolour Society from 1912, also with the Dublin Painters Society (1939-54) and the Munster Fine Art Club, and also abroad. The influence of Paul HenryÕs figurative paintings from his Achill period are evident in much of her work but the main influence on her work was Jack Yeats, in his representational phase. Hilary Pyle notes that she laid a similar emphasis on line, though she never developed colour as he did. She tended to be interested mainly in the abstract effects of light, though continuing to paint in a realist manner. Numerous paintings in and around Wicklow and Arklow towns are recorded including a work from 1944 entitled ÔThe Bridge of the Seven Arches, WicklowÕ, the subject of the present work which was exhibited at the RHA that year.

Wicklow, Lilian Davidson studied at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art where she was a prize-winning student. In 1897 she won the RDS Scholarship which carried a free studentship, it didnt come too soon as that was the year of her fathers death. She began exhibiting at the RHA in 1914 and did so regularly until her death. When in Dublin she taught painting privately in her studio and at schools around the county. Although not in very buoyant financial circumstances she travelled extensively and did so for most of her life. She painted landscapes in France, Belgium and Switzerland, besides various parts of Ireland. She first exhibited at the Watercolour Society in 1912, and did so until 1954. She also exhibited regularly with the Dublin Painters Society (1939-54) and the Munster Fine Art Club, and was part of an interesting circle, being friendly with Jack Yeats whom she painted. She also wrote plays under the pseudonym of Ulick Burke, and her most famous play 'Bride' was directed at the Gate Theatre by Hilton Edwards, with sets designed by Michael McLiammoir. She was certainly aware of the works of Honore Daumier and Jean Francois Millet and used the same prototype of humanity for important works depicting the Irish Peasant. Davidson portrayed the Claddagh, the Irish-speaking district of Galway, at a time when she was involved with the Torch Theatre for whom she was writing a play. Her portraits of Jack B. Yeats and Sarah Purser can be found in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Ireland, and other works including a self-portrait 'The Golden Shawl' are in Dublin City Gallery, the Hugh Lane, the Abbey Theatre and Ulster Museum Collections.

Provenance: Private Collection A friend of Mainie Jellett, Lilian Lucy Davidson was, like Jellett, one of the generation of exceptionally capable, independent minded women artists who contributed greatly to Irish art and cultural life in the early 20th century, particularly in the move toward modernism. She painted notable portraits, and she designed and painted theatre sets, but her passion was for natural subjects out of doors and she worked extensively throughout Ireland as well as spending time in France and Belgium. This fine watercolour demonstrated her combination of technical expertise and relaxed, informal attitude.

Provenance: Private Collection Lilian Lucy Davidson was born in Bray, County Wicklow in 1879. Davidson attended the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art (DMSA) from 1895 to 1905. Whilst at the DMSA, Davidson won prizes in 1895 and 1896, and was awarded a scholarship and free studentship at the Royal Dublin Society in 1897. Davidson first exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) in 1914. The painting exhibited by the RHA in 1916, 'The Harbour, St Ives', demonstrates an influence from Stanhope Forbes and the Newlyn school, with a bright palette and contrasting illumination, which became characteristic of her work. Her landscape, 'Low Tide, Wicklow', which was exhibited at the RHA in 1934, and 'Boats at Wicklow, Dusk' along with this work show her ability to depict reflections in water. Davidson exhibited at the Salon des Beaux Arts, Paris, the Royal Academy of Arts, London, and in Amsterdam. She was elected associate to the RHA in 1940, and continued to exhibit there until her death.

Wicklow, Lillian Lucy Davidson attended the Metropolitan School of Art Dublin and won prizes in 1895, 1896 and in 1897. She won the RDS scholarship that carried a free studentship, which allowed her to travel extensively. Unlike her friend Mainie Jellett, and many of her contemporaries, Lillian Davidson could not, out of economic necessity spend long periods abroad, where she might have been more influenced by the Modernist Movement. During the 1920's and 30's she embarked on a peasant cycle of paintings travelling to Donegal, Galway, Achill, and Roundstone in Connemara. The early influence of Jack Yeats is very much evident in this group of paintings, but her uniqueness is in her distinct brushwork and depicting peasants in deep thought evoking an emotional response from the viewer. All over Ireland there are little shrines, which command a purely local loyalty. A Holy Well, a Mass Rock, the site of an early church, or some spot associated with a Saint who lived and worked in the locality. In the 'Holy Well', Davidson depicts an elderly barefoot peasant couple by a Holy Well. The scene of almost perfect tranquility and prayer is only disturbed by the gaze of the elderly peasant woman, reminiscent of the French artist Honor Daumier; powerfully direct, and also a pioneer of naturalism.

Wicklow and was the sixth of ten children. At the age of sixteen she went to study at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art Dublin and won three prizes there, including the RDS Scholarship. According to Theo Snoddy; Closely associated with the Royal Hibernian Academy, she exhibited 135 works in 40 years, beginning in 1914. (94) She also showed at the Water Colour Society, the Dublin Painters' exhibitions, the Oireachtas and Aonach Tailteann exhibitions. Her work was shown abroad in London, Amsterdam, Chicago and Paris (1924 and 1930, Salon de la Societe Nationale). Aside from painting, she also wrote poetry and plays for the Gate and Torch Theatres (where she adopted the pseudonym Ulick Burke). In terms of her art practice, while principally a landscape and genre painter, she was also an accomplished portraitist and an artist fully engaged with her subjects. She painted fine likenesses of artists such as Jack B. Yeats, Sarah Purser and George Russell (AE). In a critique, The Studio described her as a competent and decorative painter. (Snoddy, 95). She was so much more than that however as testified by her range of skilful output. In Irelands Painters, she has been described as much influenced by the early work of Jack B. Yeats, rather unusual at that time. (Crookshank and Glin, 297). Indeed her figure studies with a bold and defined palette are close to Yeats work but also to that of Conor, Henry and Lamb.According to Katherine Cahill writing in the Irish Arts Review; She had a special ability in painting water, river, sea or canal. Perhaps because she was born by the sea in Bray, Boats at Wicklow, Dusk is a tour-de-force of such painting.' Wicklow town and bridge arefeatured, this time as backdrop to the boats at anchor, the rigging in mirror image in the still water of the harbour, while her mastery of atmosphere is captured in the failing evening light. (Cahill, 39) She had a remarkable ability to capture the mystery and nuances of colour, light and shadow in night studies. Her paintings on the subject include; Night in Claddagh, 1933, Night, (undated) and Cottages, Keel, Achill, 1938. While more apt in a description of the latter painting Lilian Davidsons own poem, A Night: 'The sky itself like a purple cloak'. (Cahill, 39) is also applicable to Boats at Wicklow, Dusk, where the pale purple haze suffuses the painting. A connection between Stanhope Forbes of the Newlyn School and Lilian Davidson has been speculated upon. Forbes had that enviable ability of composing scenes with a colourful yet moody palette and combining a perfect blend of realism and figuration. Cahill has observed that Davidson follows Forbes' principles of using a bright palette, square brush technique and strong impasto highlights laid on with softer brush mark, principles she carried out down the succeeding decades. Though not always employing a bright palette, she did apply his adjuration of 'strength - strength of impression, strength of illumination, of contrasts.' (Cahill, 35) French Impressionism is an acknowledged reference in Davidsons work and Boats at Wicklow, Dusk shares a remarkable affinity with Claude Monets Fishing Boats at Honfleur, 1868 both in terms of compositional structure and treatment of boats, rigging and their reflections within the water beneath. Where Davidson captures Wicklow town and bridge behind the boats, Monet features the pier and town at Honfleur. There the comparison ends as Monets freer impressionist hand is unlike the naturalism and tighter brushwork of Davidson, depicting Wicklows bridge and buildings, particularly St Thomas Church with copper clad cupola; all elements identifiable and carefully delineated. This painting is a particularly fine example of Davidsons maritime paintings and one that is full of atmosphere. The artist herself was seen as a mysterious and enigmatic character and there is much in the treatment of Boats at Wicklow, Dusk, that captures this elusive spirit. Wicklow, Lillian Lucy Davidson attended the Metropolitan School of Art Dublin and won prizes in 1895, 1896 and in 1897. She won the RDS scholarship that carried a free studentship, which allowed her to travel extensively. Unlike her friend Mainie Jellett, and many of her contemporaries, Lillian Davidson could not, out of economic necessity spend long periods abroad, where she might have been more influenced by the Modernist movement. During the 1920's and 30's she embarked on a peasant cycle of paintings travelling to Donegal, Galway, Achill, and Roundstone in Connemara. The early influence of Jack Yeats is very much in evidence in this group of paintings, but her uniqueness is in her distinct brushwork and depicting peasants in deep thought evoking an emotional response from the viewer. All over Ireland there are little shrines, which command a purely local loyalty. A Holy Well, a Mass Rock, the site of an early church, or some spot associated with a Saint who lived and worked in the locality. In the 'Holy Well', Davidson depicts an elderly barefoot peasant couple by a Holy Well. The scene of almost perfect tranquility and prayer is only disturbed by the gaze of the elderly peasant woman, reminiscent of the French artist Honoré Daumier; powerfully direct, and also a pioneer of naturalism.

After her father's death, Lilian Lucy Davidson moved to Dublin, but would occasionally return to her home town Wicklow and to Arklow to paint. When doing so she would stay at "Major Grimshaw's house, Friar's Hill, where he kept paying guests" (Irish Arts Review, 1999). The present work depicts the courtyard of Major Grimshaw's house.
