Colin Davidson PPRUA (b.1968) What Isn't Said (Portrait of Roddy Doyle) Oil on linen, 127 x 117cm (50 x 46'') Signed Exhibited: Dublin, Royal Hibernian Academy, 2011 Annual Exhibition A household name isn’t always that. But Roddy Doyle’s name is known in every household in Ireland and in many households elsewhere. Educated at a National School in Raheny, at St Fintan’s Christian Brothers school in Sutton and then at UCD, Doyle taught English and Geography in Kilbarrack 1979-1993. Kilbarrack became the Barrytown in his fiction. His first novel The Commitments, published 1989, was filmed in 1991. Known for his books for adults and children, the film adaptations, his plays, his television dramas, his street cred and his commitment to young aspiring writers through Fighting Words, Doyle’s work has changed the map of Irish literature. It introduced readers to a working-class who face hassles and challenges with resilience and an earthy humour, a working class never oppressed by the Catholic Church. For Doyle, a self-professed atheist, priests do not get a look in. When Colin Davidson’s commissioned portrait of Angela Merkel made the cover of Time magazine in December 2015 it was viewed by millions. That Merkel portrait was based on photographs and it was the first time he painted a portrait without a live sitting. But Roddy Doyle sat for him as did Queen Elizabeth II, President Michael D Higgins, Jennifer Johnston, Seamus Heaney, Ed Sheeran, Jamie Doran, Christy Moore, Michael Longley and Brian Friel. This portrait of Roddy Doyle, dated 2011, was painted when Colin Davidson was forty-three. The writer was fifty-three. By then, Doyle was firmly established in the literary world. In 1993, Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha won the prestigious Booker Prize and when Doyle was appointed a Royal Society of Literature Fellow, his significance was acknowledged and assured. Davidson, born Belfast 1968, says ‘I am constantly drawn back to the human form, and more broadly “humanity” in all my work’ and Doyle’s humanity shines through here. Doyle is a quiet, relaxed presence. He is a writer at ease with himself and his audience. The casual open-necked, red-and-black checked shirt, the dark t-shirt beneath suggest nothing self-important or formal about this sitter. Has anyone ever seen Roddy Doyle in a collar and tie Doyle is no attention seeker. He himself says ‘I’m not recognised that much. I’m just a bald man in glasses and there’s a rash of them in Dublin.’ But this bald man in glasses with a steady, friendly gaze, has an original and lively imagination. The viewer returns again and again to Doyle’s eyes. He looks away to our right, he looks through steel-rimmed glasses, the frames and the reflections are brilliantly accurate but the skin tones and textures reveal Davidson’s expert handling of paint. In his portraits, painterliness is always evident. Davidson captures the thinking, imagining presence of his sitter in a brilliant likeness but fluent brushwork means it’s more interesting than a hard-edged, photographic-realistic portrait. That blurred ear merges with the plain background, the red in the shirt melts into the abstract backdrop, the softness in the wrinkled high forehead and the rounded head contrast with the more defined and effectively-lit face. Roddy Doyle, with an open, friendly look, is a man you’d be happy to have a drink with. Above all else, Doyle’s intelligence shines through. This is a large portrait. His head is big but anyone who knows anything about Roddy Doyle, the man and his work, knows that he is never big-headed. In his studio Davidson says that he always leaves the sitter choose whether to remain silent or speak during a sitting. Colin Davidson’s title What Isn’t Said reminds us that Roddy Doyle is a wordsmith. Doyle’s medium is language but Davidson working in what Virginia Woolf calls ‘the silent kingdom of paint’ suggests, in that chosen title, that things remain unspoken, that Roddy Doyle has more to say. Colin Davidson (b.1968) Night Painting (2016) oil on canvas signed, titled and dated verso h:117  w:127 cm. Provenance: Oliver Sears Gallery, Dublin (label verso); Private Collection Belfast-born Colin Davidson is best known, and very well known, for his highly realistic, larger-than-life portrait heads. Their appeal is such that his list of sitters has grown to encompass a formidable number of celebrity subjects, from Queen Elizabeth to Angela Merkel, Seamus Heaney to Brad Pitt. He came to portraiture by chance, having begun as a painter of city-scapes, including aerial views of Belfast and the complicated topography of busy commercial street fronts. One day he had an urge to paint his friend, musician Duke Special. When Glen Hansard saw that painting Davidson was commissioned to provide an image for an album cover and essentially he hasn't looked back since. Portraiture includes and alternates with specific projects: Jerusalem comprises close-ups of 12 diverse inhabitants of the city; Silent Testimony features people whose lives were impacted by the Troubles; Elgar's Enigma Variations inspired a set of 14 paintings of a single bouquet of flowers as it withers and crumbles, and Night Paintings is a series of nudes. As the title suggests, they were painted under artificial light. In some respects they are like art school life room paintings in that they are quite Spartan: a nude figure posed in a plain setting, coolly illuminated. In all this they also recall some of Lucian Freud's nude portraits, in the way the artist's attention is forensically directed towards making a dispassionate visual record of a naked person. It is true that the artist is male and the subject is female, which inevitably colours the transaction, though Davidson's carefully objective approach does suggest an awareness of the history of the male gaze. His aim, he has said, was to make not technical studies, as with life room work, but to provide an intense description of a human subject. Aidan Dunne, September 2021

Provenance: Oliver Sears Gallery, Dublin (label verso); Private Collection Exhibited: Oliver Sears Gallery, Dublin, 22nd March 2012 - 20th April 2012 - Transmission Exhibition Literature: Transmission Exhibition - Oliver Sears Gallery, Dublin, 22nd March 2012 - 20th April 2012 (illustrated page 27) Celebrated for his vivid, larger-than-life portraits, which are both quasi-photographic in their realism yet distinctly painterly in their gestural freedom, Colin Davidson has over the last decade built up an unrivalled portfolio of sitters, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel for Time Magazine's Person of the Year cover. He made several studies of the Czech musician Markéta Irglová. Musically gifted from an early age, she was a teenager when she first met Glen Hansard at a music festival organised by her father. Eventually they formed a band, The Swell Season and co-wrote the music for and starred in the film Once, winning an Oscar for Falling Slowly. They became romantically involved for two years but then went their separate ways (she is now married and lives in Iceland). Davidson was born in Belfast and, when he began his art studies, had no intention of being a portrait painter. His early work was based on expansive, aerial view of Belfast city. Then he moved closer to the street, making compositions based on the visual complexities created by the streetscape, shop window displays, glazing and multiple reflections, and the mixture of interior and exterior details. The musician Duke Special was a good friend and Davidson thought he would like to try a portrait. That painting was seen by Glen Hansard, who soon commissioned an album cover portrait from the artist. So striking were these initial portrait images that commissions and offers came thick and fast. Among those painted by him are Seamus Heaney, Michael Longley, Brad Pitt, even her Majesty The Queen. His Brad Pitt portrait (one of two) in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in the United States, where it was seen by Time Magazine editors. Hence the Merkel commission. He does not just paint the rich and famous. His Jerusalem series consists of 12 portraits illustrating the diversity of the city's history and population. While Silent Testimony featured 18 individuals whose lives have been touched by The Troubles in Northern Ireland. Aidan Dunne, March 2020

Colin Davidson (b.1968) A Fall 2 (2016) oil on canvas signed, titled and dated 2016 verso h:167.50  w:183 cm. Provenance: Private Collection Colin Davidson has become best known for his many large-scale portrait heads, virtuoso pieces of painting which combine almost photographic realism with vigorous, gestural brushwork. His list of sitters encompasses an extraordinary range of individuals and backgrounds: from poets Seamus Heaney and Michael Longley to the Queen and Brad Pitt. The latter painting prompted Time Magazine to have him paint Angela Merkel for their cover. But he never set out to be a portrait painter. Born in Belfast, he studied at the University of Ulster and went on to make work based on aerial views of the city. Then he painted shopfronts in the city, relishing the visual complexities of reflections. One day he made a painting of a friend, musician Duke Special. Glen Hansard happened to see the work and commissioned an album cover. Another project, Jerusalem, comprises 12 portraits making up a composite of the city's varied population, and the 18 subjects of Silent Testimony are all individuals impacted by the Troubles. In 2016, in a change of tempo, Davidson made a number of nude studies. Ten of them were exhibited at the Oliver Sears Gallery as Ten Night Paintings. This contemptuous figure study from a related series is a dynamic work in which the figure in motion is rendered with Davidson's characteristic blend of heightened realism and fast, gestural paint-handling. Amanda Croft commented in the exhibition catalogue that “it is the architectural framework of the city as a whole, its intersecting network of roads, rivers and bridges, and its geographical setting that attracts him, not the social hustle and bustle of its inhabitants”. Looking Towards Belfast Lough from Windsor House is dominated by its unusual aerial view into the City Hall, luminous in the winter sunshine, with a complex geometric analysis of the streets in the foreground echoed as the image of the city stretches away towards the river. Amanda Croft noted that the present painting benefited from its large scale and that the “sheer breadth of these urban vistas is matched by the physical scale of Davidson’s canvases”. Even for those familiar with the city, the high vantage points from which Davidson was able to draw and paint Belfast set them apart from the everyday experience of most people. While the paintings are topographically accurate there are “many areas of these paintings which function in a purely abstract manner” and they become images that are true to the city on many different levels, as much concerned with “the energy and nature of the city as a whole, as they are about replicating preconceived notions of an image of Belfast”.

Colin Davidson RUA (b.1968) Seated Nude oil on canvas signed lower right h:76.50  w:71.25 cm. Provenance: Kerlin Gallery, Belfast (framing label verso); Private Collection Colin Davidson is a contemporary artist living and working near Belfast, Northern Ireland. He began his artistic career as an urban landscape painter, but after the production of his critically acclaimed portraits of very recognisable public figures, the focus quickly shifted to large-scale portraits. He paints his subjects from life in the traditional sense with a style that evokes Lucian Freud's paintings. In terms of process these portrait paintings can be seen as a direct follow on from his urban landscape works because of their sheer scale and use of impasto. The naked figure conveys a vulnerability, a raw loneliness, grief, anguish, despair.

Colin Davidson (b.1968) Towards Carrickfergus From Knockagh oil on canvas signed lower right & dated 2006, signed, titled & dated on reverse h:51  w:61 cm. Provenance: Private Collection Colin Davidson was born in Belfast in 1968. He attended Methodist College Belfast between 1980 and 1987 and graduated from the University of Ulster in 1991 with a First Class Honours Degree in Design. He worked in the field of design for print until 1999 when he started to paint full-time. Davidson painted his native city in his teens, but this theme came to the fore in 2004 when his exhibition 'No Continuing City' was mounted at the Tom Caldwell Gallery. The exhibition included large paintings of Belfast as seen from high view-points. It was seen at the time as a unique view of this city emerging from decades of the Troubles. The urban theme continued between 2006 and 2010. Davidson is an Academician of the Royal Ulster Academy and served as President of the Royal Ulster Academy between 2012 and 2015.
