            The sketches were intended to illustrate and design a Haggadah for passover that seems to have never come to There is no known Haggadah that Shmuel Ben David illustrated in the Israel national library. The sketches are illustrated water colors and signed by the artist ( two of which are signed in English and in Hebrew General conditions are very good. signs of ageing. some small oxidation to the paper dimensions 20*30 Shabat Menachem Davidov (later Shmuel Ben David) studied under Boris Schatz at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia. In 1906, he immigrated to Palestine and enrolled at the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts established by Schatz in Jerusalem. Ben David was the first Bezalel student to become a teacher there. He taught in the Tapestry Department and devoted much of his artistic endeavor to research and design of Hebrew typography; his preoccupation with the Hebrew alphabet brought forth an extensive lexicon of ornamentation. In 1912, the artist traveled to Paris and continued his art studies at the Academie Julian and left a collection of sketch books In 1920 Ben David was one of the founders of the Agudat Omanim Ivrit (Association of Hebrew Artists). He organized the Association’s first exhibition and was its first chairman. Around 1923 Ben David produced a unique copy of an illuminated Scroll of Esther, made of parchment. Ben David died in Jerusalem in 1927 and was buried in the Mount of Olives Cemetery.

            Shmuel Ben David (1880-1927), A Yemmeni Boy, Small Color Lithography in lithographic print by Raphael Avraham Shalem, one of the earliest and most artistic prints by Bezalel. In the poster there is a Yemmeni boy in a stripe cape, holding in his hand a pouch for the Esther Scroll in the style of the filigree pouches made by Bezalel, and in the background Bezalel houses. The poster is signed in print "Ben David" and "Bezalel Jerusalem". Framed (late framing), measurements: 19X20 cm.

            The sketches were intended to illustrate and design A passover Haggadah that seems to have never been printed. There is no known copy in the Israel nation library of a haggadah illustrated by Shmuel Ben david. The sketches are illustrated with water colors and sketching on paper. Clear Jewish symbolism and Art nouveau elements The two sketches are signed by the artist on the right side of the paper.' On the paper there are notes regarding the works and on one of the sketches there is technical sizing of one of the lion sketches. Attached to the sketches were the Haggadah texts that were supposed to be put into frame. On one the sketches the original Text is still attached. On the other it has been torn of.             "Jewish Artists Association, members' gift" (Hebrew). Published by the "Bezalel School, Jerusalem" [ca. 1926]. An album handed out as a gift to members of the "Jewish Artists Association", containing eight stencil prints by Shmuel Ben-David and Meir Gur-Arie, and photographic reproductions of various works (including the sculpture "Mattathias the Hasmonean" and the bronze plaque "Midnight", both by Boris Schatz). The prints and photographs are mounted on brown paper and inserted in a black paper wrapper (also stencil-printed). The "Jewish Artists Association" was founded in 1920. Its first board members included Shmuel Ben-David, Meir Gur-Arie, Abraham Melnikoff and Abel Pann. In the years 1921-1928 the association held a number of exhibitions; all except one were held at the Tower of David. During the 1930s the association's activities ceased, and in 1934 it was replaced by the "Painters and Sculptors Association". [12] leaves, 22X30 cm (print size varies). Filing holes to each leaf and to wrapper (for binding with a string). Good condition. Damage to wrapper. Inserted in a box. Provenance: Willy Lindwer collection.
