JACQUES-LOUIS DAVID - Huile sur toile

      Est: CHF400,000 - CHF600,000

JACQUES-LOUIS DAVID , PARIS, 1748 - BRUSSELS, 1825 Le Bélisaire Oil on canvas 43 x 55 cm In a tight frame, an old man with his head bent down, submissive, holds out his left arm to beg for alms. With his other hand, he leans on a spear, the top of which is sticking out of the frame. Just behind him, a child, with a frightened look on his face, helps him to raise his arm. The figures are depicted in bust form. The scene is a detail of a larger painting that tells the whole story, the iniquitous story of the Byzantine general Belisarius, who was blinded and reduced to begging by the jealousy of the emperor Justinian. This large-format history painting, painted by Jacques-Louis David in 1780, is now in the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille. A copy by its author is in the Louvre. We can recognize here the smooth and precise workmanship of David. The power of his drawing with its sharp contours, the subtle chiaroscuro that serves the action by illuminating the significant details: the bald forehead, bent in a movement of humility, the still muscular arm and the supplicant hand. The light also hierarchises by leaving the child, secondary, in semi-darkness. The plain background with its brown tones refers us to the characters. The influence of Caravaggio is evident here. Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) is the leader of the neoclassical school. Trained in Vien's studio, David won the first prize in Rome in 1774, where he left to settle for six years, multiplying his travels throughout Italy. He became familiar with Antiquity, drawing Roman ruins as far as Pompeii. But he also discovered Caravaggio, whose chiaroscuro he admired, and Poussin, whose rigorous composition and clear narration he appreciated. On his return from Rome, he produced his Belisarius, a masterpiece that was unanimously admired and which was his favourite piece at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. A committed and soon to be revolutionary painter, David turned his painting into a political manifesto. The rigour of his compositions is matched by a moral discourse. The apology of Roman virtue, virile and incorruptible, made him choose ever more edifying themes such as The Oath of the Horatii or Brutus, now in the Louvre. After the Revolution, during which he held important positions, he took up the cause of Napoleon Bonaparte, becoming his official painter once he became emperor. He then painted his masterpiece, The Rite of Napoleon. A rebellious and independent artist, he went into exile in Brussels at the end of the Empire where he continued a career as a portrait painter. David, Musée Jaquemart - André, Paris 2005.

c - ATTRIBUTED TO JACQUES-LOUIS DAVID PARIS 1748 - 1825 BRUSSELS A SHEET OF STUDIES OF CLASSICAL FIGURES, GROUPS OF SOLDIERS AND HEADS IN PROFILE each figure accompanied by an inscription in French or Greek black chalk PROVENANCE David sale, Paris, 17 April 1826; Second David Sale, Paris, 11 March 1835 CATALOGUE NOTE David was in Rome from November 1775 to July 1780, during which time he drew extensively, largely copying classical sculptures, works which would later serve him well in his paintings. He also made some copies after old master paintings and drew some landscapes in and around Rome. These drawings were made in sketchbooks, but on his return to France he mounted them in albums, organized by subject. After David's death, the original albums were broken up into 12 different albums, and were included in the estate sale of 17 April 1826, and a subsequent sale in March 1835. David included many 'calques', or tracings, in his albums, most of them based on illustrations in P. d'Hancarville, Antiquités étrusques...tirées du cabinet de M. Hamilton..., 4 vols., Naples, 1766-67 or A. F. Gori, Gemmae antiquae ex thesauro Mediceo..., Florence, 1731-1732. Rosenberg and Prat feel that the calques are probably not by David himself, but that he nonetheless valued them and kept them, and even worked some up with grey wash (Rosenberg and Prat, op.cit., p. 402). David's sons did not put their paraphes on the calques in the albums which they recomposed after their father's death. For an extremely impressive and complete discussion of the composition and history of the albums, see Pierre Rosenberg and Louis-Antoine Prat, Jacques-Louis David, Catalogue raisonné des dessins, Milan 2002, vol. I, pp. 391-407.
