STUDIO OF JACQUES-LOUIS DAVID (1748-1825) STUDIO OF JACQUES-LOUIS DAVID (1748-1825) Academic study of a man oil on canvas 46 x 56 cm. (18 x 22 in.) Jacques-Louis David, one of the most influential French painters of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. David was a leading figure of the Neoclassical movement, which sought to revive the classical ideals of ancient Greece and Rome in response to the excesses of the Rococo style. A central figure in the development of Neoclassicism. His works are characterised by their clear lines, classical themes, moral seriousness, and emphasis on civic virtues. David's paintings, such as The Oath of the Horatii and The Death of Socrates, are iconic examples of Neoclassical art, emphasising stoicism, sacrifice, and the importance of duty. Davidâs studio was not just a place of artistic production but also an influential hub for the transmission of Neoclassical ideals to a new generation of artists. As a teacher, David had a profound impact on many young painters who would go on to become significant figures in their own right. Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres: Perhaps the most famous of Davidâs students, Ingres developed a style that combined Davidâs Neoclassicism with a more sensual and linear approach. Ingres became a leading figure in French painting, known for his portraits and historical scenes. Antoine-Jean Gros: Gros became known for his dramatic and emotionally charged scenes of Napoleonâs campaigns. His work bridged the gap between Neoclassicism and Romanticism, marking a shift in the artistic mood of the time. Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson: Another key student, Girodet was known for his intricate compositions and poetic, often melancholic, themes. His work also contributed to the transition from Neoclassicism to Romanticism. Baron FranÃ§ois GÃ©rard: GÃ©rard specialised in portraiture and historical scenes, becoming one of the most sought-after portraitists of his time. David's teaching method was rigorous and academic, rooted in the study of classical antiquity. Students in his studio were encouraged to focus on drawing and composition, often copying classical sculptures and studying anatomy as can be seen in the present canvas. David emphasised the importance of line over colour, and moral narratives over decorative detail, reflecting his commitment to the ideals of Neoclassicism. David's influence extended far beyond his immediate students. The Neoclassical style that he championed became the dominant mode of artistic expression in Europe during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His students, many of whom achieved significant success, continued to propagate and adapt his ideas, ensuring the persistence of Neoclassical ideals well into the 19th century. The studio of Jacques-Louis David was therefore a crucible of artistic development that shaped the course of European art, not only through the works of David himself but also through the achievements of the many significant artists he mentored. Fu, assieme ad Antonio Canova e Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres un esponente di massimo livello della corrente neoclassica dell'arte europea tra il XVIII ed il XIX secolo. Di origini piccolo-borghesi, si formò nell’atelier di Joseph-Marie Vien. Nel 1769 ottenne il terzo premio al Prix de quartier, e grazie a questo partecipò al Prix de Rome. Tra il 1775 e il 1780 risiedette a Roma, dove approfondì gli studi della scultura antica e dove rimase affascinato dalla pittura rinascimentale e barocca, soprattutto di Raffaello, tanto che il suo stile si plasmò in chiave neoclassica. Fu fervido rivoluzionario e cantò pittoricamente le gesta di Napoleone. La sua arte fece epoca e l'École de David fu in uso già nei primi anni del XIX secolo, considerando appartenenti alla stessa sia gli allievi diretti sia i pittori della sua cerchia, tra questi: Jean-Germain Drouais, Antoine-Jean Gros, François Gérard, Anne-Louis Girodet, Jean-Baptiste Isabey, Jean-Pierre Franque, Jérôme-Martin Langlois, Jean-Baptiste Joseph Wicar. Gemäldepaar PORTRAIT DER PAOLINA BORGHESE sowie PORTRAIT DER EUGÉNIE DE BEAUHARNAIS Öl auf Leinwand. 49 x 37 sowie 49 x 35 cm. Das erste Portrait verso auf Leinwand monogrammiert „SM“ und datiert „1824“, das zweite Portrait ebenfalls verso monogrammiert und datiert „1823“. In vergoldeten Prunkrahmen. Brustbildnis der beiden Damen, jeweils mit Blickrichtung nach links, zum einen mit langen dunklen lockigen Haaren und hochgegürtetem türkisfarbenem Kleid, das zweite Portrait zeigt die dargestellte Eugenia und hellem Gewand mit roter Toga, die mit einer Agraffe auf der linken Schulter befestigt ist, dazu trägt sie ein Diadem und Ohrringe aus zusammengesetzten Münzen. Leicht schematisch wirkende Darstellungen in zurückhaltender Farbigkeit. Zudem verso auf der Leinwand auf Aufkleber bezeichnet „Paolina Borghese“, das andere Werk als „Principessa Eugenia“. Jacques-Lous David fue, sin lugar a dudas, el pintor más conocido y aclamado en la Francia de finales del S. XVIII y principios del S. XIX. Fue un defensor absoluto de la Revolución francesa y, por ende, partidario de Napoleón Bonaparte. No es de extrañar pues, que el emperador le encargara en 1804, meses antes del acontecimiento, el gran lienzo en el que se representa su coronación, evento celebrado en la Catedral de Notre-Dame de París , al que el propio pintor acudió. Tras haber permanecido fiel, David se vio obligado a exiliarse tras la caída de Napoleón y el regreso de los borbones al poder en 1815. En enero de 1816, Jacques-Lous David marchó a Bruselas, donde permanecería el resto de su vida. En este momento, probablemente para hacer frente al coste de su reubicación y ayudar a financiar su instalación en un nuevo hogar, el pintor aceptó un número inusual de encargos de retratos. En principio los encargos provenían de los círculos sociales compuestos fundamentalmente por revolucionarios exiliados como él, así como de miembros de la extensa familia del emperador destronado. Varios de estos retratos se conservan hoy día en grandes museos como el Louvre, la National Gallery de Londres, o el Metropolitan Museum of Art de Nueva York, así como en colecciones privadas. El presente retrato pudo ser, presumiblemente, uno de los encargos recibidos por el pintor en Bruselas. Representa a una señora de mediana edad, recién enviudada, acompañada por sus dos hijos. Un medallón colgado de su cuello muestra el retrato en miniatura del esposo desaparecido. El hijo menor muestra un entrañable gesto de consuelo hacia su madre mientras que el mayor parece haber asumido su nueva función como cabeza de familia. En conjunto, con este retrato, Jacques-Louis Davis establece una metáfora del exilio, la pérdida y la desazón tras la caída de Napoleón y la restauración de la monarquía borbónica en Francia previa a la revolución de 1830.

JACQUES- LOUIS DAVID (1748-1825), D’APRES « Portrait de jeune femme à la robe blanche sous l’Empire » Huile sur toile réentoilée Signé à droite « L.David » H. 73 - L. 60 cm à vue H.91 – L. 79 cm avec cadre Cadre en bois et stuc doré à décor de palmettes et feuilles d’acanthes aux écoinçons. La représentation de jeunes femmes en robe blanche est emblématique du premier Empire, en rupture avec les dentelles et chapeaux des portraits de l’Ancien Régime. Un changement à porter au mérite de Juliette Récamier dont l’ameublement à l’antique et les ténues « à la grecque » firent la réputation de son salon à la fin du Directoire. La posture de notre modèle rappelle d’ailleurs le portrait de l’illustre dame en 1805 par le baron Gérard.
