GIOVANNI DAVID (CABELLA LIGURE 1749-1790 GENOA) GIOVANNI DAVID (CABELLA LIGURE 1749-1790 GENOA) Moses presenting the tablets of the law faintly inscribed 'Salvator Rosa' (lower left) pen, ink and ink wash over a partial underdrawing in black chalk, with traces of squaring in black chalk 30 x 39.5 cm Giovanni David studied with Domenico Corvi in Rome in the early 1770’s, winning a first prize at the Accademia di San Luca in 1775. The present work bears striking resemblance especially in the composition to David's final entry to the prize, and may be considered a first study for it. The subject that the contestants were assigned for the (international) competition that year was "Moses who, having taken up the new Tables of the Law, returned to the People, explains to them with his veiled head the precepts imprinted on them by God". The winning watercolour and ink on paper by David is still held in the archive of the Accademia di San Luca (inv. A.488, see last image accompanying this lot, from M. Newcome Schleier and Grasso, Giovanni David: pittore e incisore della famiglia Durazzo, p. 17). David spent some time in Naples and in Venice before returning to Genoa at the end of the 1770’s. There he entered the service of the Genoese count Giacomo Durazzo, a diplomat and collector who had earlier sponsored David’s artistic training in Rome and who was to be his protector and chief patron throughout his career. He also produced a large number of prints of allegorical, iterary and genre subjects, as well as reproductive etchings after the work of earlier artists. Many of his prints seem to have been commissioned by Giacomo Durazzo, or were dedicated to him.

(Cabella Ligure, 1743 - Genova 1790) Medea che uccide il drago Penna, gessetto nero, inchiostro bruno e acquerello su carta grigia, cm 27,7X22,7 Inscritto: Salvator Rosa Prov. Coll. Tadellos erhalten.

Giovanni David Oil on Board of Sophonisba

Signed David 1787 oil on panel of "Sophonisba" 27" x 16.5" oil on wood panel of Sophonisba's death with documentation from Jonathan Woodside photographs in Victorian home. Ex Jonathan F. Woodside Collection. Jonathan F. Woodside (1799-1845) was a member of the Democratic Party in Chillicothe, Ohio. Andrew Jackson appointed him US ambassador to Denmark. He was the second US ambassador to Denmark and had an influential relationship with the Danish king. He served as Ambassador from March 3, 1835 until June 29, 1841. After being recalled to the United States he moved back to Chillicothe, Ohio where he died at a young age in 1845. While residing in Copenhagen he assembled one of the most significant collections of art to be brought to the United States at the time. He became a member of the "Société Royale des Antiquaires du Nord". There are over 200 pieces of art manifested in this collection, including original receipts and shipping instructions that accompany the manifest. Several letters were written by the family over the next 150 years describing the collection. An early letter states: "Five distinct collections were made, the first from the Royal Gallery in Dresden. The second the Pitti Gallery in Florence, the third the Louvre in Paris...." One of Woodside's letters mentions paintings purchased from Noodt (Johann Noodt, a prominent art dealer & auctioneer in Hamburg at the time) & P. H. Heiniking of Altoona. Of this over 200 piece collection, a large portion was lost in 2 fires, at St. Xavier's Cathedral in Cincinnati and the "big fire" in Chicago. The remainder of art was passed from generation to generation in the family. Framed it is 32" x 21.75".
