Album containing 27 photographs of Algeria.  Oblong quarto album (9 x 13 in.) 230 x 330 mm. 27 albumen photographs, majority approx. 4 3/4 x 8 3/4 in., mounted recto on 8 1/2 x 12 1/4 in. album pages (toning to prints, occasional toning and soiling to mounts). Orginal textured green cloth boards (partial spine separation, scuffing to boards and extremities). Albumen print on Davanne's embossed monogrammed mount, 10 3/4 x 14 1/8 inches (274 x 378 mm), mount with Davanne's monogram, titled in ink (l.r.). Losses to upper extremities of mount, all corners chipped, mount toned and brittle, the large albumen print in generally clean condition with good tones. C

Louis-Alphonse Davanne (1824-1912) was a chemist and an important photographer. Davanne was a founding member of the SFP (Société Française de Photographie). He was very active in investigating new photographic processes. He succeeded Louis Robert in 1872 as the photography teacher at l'Ecole des Ponts et Chaussees. He also taught at the Sorbonne and at Arts et Métiers. He traveled and photographed broadly, including France, Italy, Germany and Algeria. Davanne was president of the Société de Photographie from 1876 to 1901.

        Louis Alphonse Davanne, Le port de Monaco, vers 1885. Tirage d'époque au charbon, emprunte à sec de Davanne en marge. Chimiste de formation, il s'intéresse très tôt à la photographie. En 1854 il fait partie des membres fondateurs de la Société Française de la Photographie (SFP) avant d'en devenir le président de 1867 à 1901. Sa disparition en 1912 est, selon la SFP, "un deuil pour toute la famille photographique mondiale". Cette image, l'une des toutes premières de la Principauté, nous présente le quartier de la Condamine, sa plage et ses bateaux échoués, au pied du Rocher.
