        Est: RM62,000 - RM82,000

This was a diversion for Dato' Sharifah Fatimah from her irregular episodal series. Dato' Sharifah's rendition done on her return from the Sarawak excursion in Kuala Lumpur, is full of symbolism, evoking the Sarawakian animist beliefs and affinity to Nature, and the totemism of ancestral practices. It looks more like a sacred parchment. Dato' Sharifah Fatimah had her later art tutelage on both sides of the Atlantic, first at Reading University in England (1973-1976) and then for her MFA at Pratt Institute in New York (1976-1978). She was from the pioneering batch of fine art students graduating from the Mara Institute of Technology (now a university), in 1971. Her major triumph was the Major Award in the 1979 Salon Malaysia, apart from the Minor Award in the Young Contemporary Artists (Bakat Muda Sezaman) in 1981 and the Malaysian Landscape competition in 1972. Sharifah Fatimah Syed Zubir, Dato' (b. 1948) Untitled, 1990s

        Est: RM55,000 - RM75,000

In this exquisite canvas by one of Malaysia's leading female artists, Dato' Sharifah Fatimah, thick and colourful strokes were applied across the canvas in an enticing palette, revealing mesmerising golden hues beneath. The interplay of bejewelled shapes, linked and unlinked, geometric and organic, is concentrated in the central area, but is not confined to the centre. The mood it evokes is one of calm, quiet, and comforting. The whole painting 'being' has become a spiritual journey. It is couched in her Mindscape series, done in the early half of the 1990s. Dato' Sharifah Fatimah has fashioned a unique brand of abstract art imbued with strong spiritual values, symbolisms and local colours. She graduated from MARA Institute of Technology in 1971 with the Best Student Award. Her first solo followed in 1972 at the Alpha Gallery in Singapore. Inspired by forms in nature, broad strokes are rendered with palette knife. The technique of using modelling paste for its textural quality was inspired by the Indonesian artist A.D. Pirous. Touch The Earth Series - 06 demonstrates the artist's exploration of space and colours which gives this piece a refined elegance, resulting in a poetic composition of balanced elements. Mar. 19, 2023

Sharifah Fatimah Syed Zubir, Dato' (b. 1948) Link 2, 1979

        Est: RM12,000 - RM20,000

This must be the most blistering red swathe in Dato' Sharifah Fatimah Zubir's extensive repertoire, with odd geometric shapes and sharp edges. This 1979 Link 2 is poles apart from her 1997 series like The Link: there is no link at all. She had gone RED in her 1978 works, like in Angin Mawar, which won a prize in Salon Malaysia (now in the collection of the National Art Gallery). The overall veneer points to something celebratory, but the hasty, awkward overlaps with skeins of paint at the edges, with the sharp protrusions have a more sobering effect. But there is a sense of anchoring stability in the horizontal bottom phalanx, whatever the red tide portends or leads to. As the first batch of fine-art students from the Mara Institute of Technology (now a university), graduating in 1971, Dato' Sharifah Fatimah Zubir served notice of her huge potential when she won the hugely coveted Major Award in the 1979 Salon Malaysia, though she had clinched the Minor Award in the Malaysian Landscape competition in 1972, the year she held her first solo in Singapore. Est: RM25,000 - RM32,000

Enigmatic and bold in subject and execution, Dato' Sharifah's multi-layered canvases are embraced for her gorgeously mixed prismatic colours. Here, there is an interplay of contrasting colours vibrating and flowing into one another imbued with fervour. Strongly influenced by nature's movements and her sojourns in new landscapes and experiences, the artist is constantly inventive in her creations, producing contemplative works which suggest an underlying philosophical ideal. Dato' Sharifah Fatimah Zubir is known for her unique abstract art infused with divine truth, lyrical symbolisms and a spectrum of local colours. She was the Best Student when she graduated from the Mara Institute of Technology in 1971, which she followed up with a First Class Honours for her BFA at Reading University, England in 1976 and her Masters under the JDR III Fund Fellowship at Pratt Institute in New York from 1976 to 1978. Inspired by Dato’ Sharifah Fatimah Syed Zubir’s visit to the ancient Petra ruins in southern Jordan in 1990, the initial skirmishes in 1992 were in exploring the textural nuances in her animated colours. In this from a trio offshoot called Hymns Of The Earth, Dato’ Sharifah reverts to a landscape veneer of expressionistic ruminations. The exhibitions, Touch The Earth I and II, were held at Galeri Seni Maybank and Galeri Citra, respectively, in Kuala Lumpur. Dato’ Sharifah Fatimah Syed Zubir is a pioneering abstract artist from the first batch of fine art students from the Mara Institute of Technology (now a university), graduating in 1971. She pursued her BFA at Reading University, England (1973-1976) and MFA at the Pratt Institute, New York (1976-1978), besides a museum management course in London in 1987. Her laurels include Minor Awards in the Malaysian Landscape (1972) and the Bakat Muda Sezaman (1981), the Major Award in Salon Malaysia (1979). In 2007, the Sultan of Kedah conferred her the Darjah Dato’ Setia DiRaja Kedah title, and in 2014 she was honoured with the Women of Excellence Award. Overseas, she won the 3rd Prize in the 2nd Biennial of Contemporary Painting of the Islamic World in Teheran, Iran, in 2003. Prices of her artworks have been soaring high recently in auction houses locally and abroad.

These works on paper were created when the artist was studying art abroad, and is a testament to her early talents. Inspired by rock formations in nature, broad strokes are rendered with palette knife. The technique of using modelling paste for its textural quality was inspired by the Indonesian artist A.D. Pirous. In this work, colours of different tones and hues are applied, creating mesmerizing layers of depth. Colours and the play of light are the main components of Dato' Sharifah Fatimah's work. For her, colour is energy while light symbolises existence. The artist manifests the dynamic interactions of colours, combining elegant strokes applied in multiple directions. She is also strongly influenced by nature's movements, producing contemplative works which suggest an underlying philosophical ideal. In this work, layers of colours are boldly applied across the picture plane, emphasizing textural nuances created using modelling paste. The colour palette made up of sienna, red and ochre of the painting appears borrowed from the natural scenery informed by the artist’s travels. Subdued colour patterns from the rock formations of Petra are seen in the overlapping strokes, as the artist skilfully incorporates landscapes in a universal and modern approach. A melange of fleeting subconscious images in an uneasy geometric-organic tangle and off-centre, with an unfamiliar phalanx of lolling verticals on both sides. Also, the colours are attenuated or striated for a lighter veneer and to add contrast. This Dato' Sharifah Fatimah Zubir work is decidedly top-down still, despite a raft of thin horizontals to balance the composition. For the preponderant vertical play, it is more unusual. 55 x 66cm

Just when you thought that Dato' Sharifah Fatimah Zubir was set on her intriguing abstract of interlocking shapes, she created a new template of viscous duller colours, more glacial and plodding in strokes held back by the additions of modelling paste, something which she saw in the works of A.D. Pirous, and when she first visited Petra (natural rock formations) in Jordan in 1990, there was a happy conjunction, and the palette knife came into play. This was from her first Touch The Earth series, another followed in 1996. The point is, she is inventive and bold, a quality one can see in her other later works and series. When Sharifah Fatimah Syed Zubir, Dato’ projected her Mindscapes in the first half of the 1990s, it set another benchmark in her absorption of nebulous landscapes deconstructed or defragmented into emotive realms. While the ruminative quality is talked about, the complex play of shapes and colours of various tonality and overlaps is also in turn, dictacted by the viewer’s own state of mind or emotional state. In one work, the cluster of shapes in the centre bounded by horizontal bands on the top and bottom shows a busier and crowded activity, while the other with large horizontal shoals of moss and luminescent greens separated by streaks of black. Some early Mindscapes that have surfaced in the Henry Butcher art auction include those on May 6 and Oct 28, both in 2012, apart from one more in the April 2016 auction. This year, 2017, is Sharifah Fatimah Syed Zubir, Dato’s 50th anniversary as an artist, having studied at Mara Institute of Technology for her Fine Art Diploma in 1967-1971. She obtained her BFA at the Reading University, England, in 1973-1976, and her MFA at the Pratt Institute, New York, in 1976-1978, under the JDR III Fund fellowship. She clinched the Major Award in the Art Salon Malaysia in 1979, and the Minor Award in the 1981 Young Contemporary Artist (BMS) competition and the Malaysian Landscape competition in 1972. She has had solos all over the world since her first at the Alpha Gallery in Singapore in 1972, and is featured in numerous major Malaysian exhibitions overseas.

Small is Big in this set of Sharifah Fatimah Syed Zubir, Dato’s Mindscape. It seems to take on a new significance in pairs, with a noticeably sharper edge geometrics or at least with sharper points. The judicious overlap of colours is a Sharifah forte, for therein the emotional moods get more ambiguous through the mist of shifting colours. Not that it works in a pair, though, as the two works are independent entities, because of the different colour schemes and shapes in composition in each work. But the more staccato cuts of what is perceived as a diagonal slant upwards to the right but with a gradual gradient are carried by the more dominant yellow hues and strips throughout.
