    Sunil Das, Indian 1939-2015 Charcoal drawing of a bull, 95 cm x 60 cm  Sunil Das was one of India's most important post-modernist painters adopting different styles of painting throughout his career. He joined the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata in 1955, then won a French Government Scholarship to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He rose to prominence early when he became the only Indian artist to win the Lalit Kala Akademi’s national award while still an undergraduate student, in 1959 receiving the award again in 1978. In 2014 the Government of India conferred upon Sunil its fourth-highest civilian award, the Padma Shri. Known for his expressive drawings of horses and bulls, Das visited Spain in the 1960s and after witnessing a series of bullfights, made several drawings and paintings of bulls. His flawless drawings capture the speed, power, and energy, of the animals, symbolic of the energy, aggression, and power, of modern times and of his own untamed youthful spirit and a sense of liberation.

The resulting fusion of structural rigidity and depth from these influences is evident in his artworks. Sunil Das's canvases transcend the physical attributes of his subjects, delving into their associative qualities. Although he occasionally portrays human figures, his depictions are often skewed, bordering on macabre surrealism. His series on women, particularly those with enigmatic, beguiling eyes, conveys a range of emotions, including the sensual, and underscores the societal pressures experienced by women. In his artistic palette, Sunil Das predominantly shuns vibrant or warm colours, opting instead for soft browns, mauves, and whites in the background to amplify the drama of life.     Das’ style of work is very original and shows no specific influence. He had risen to fame like MF Hussain with his famous paintings of horses, to the extent that he was nicknamed ‘Ghora Das’ ( Hindi which means Horse Das) Like Hussain, Das was inspired by the force and strength of the moving horse. The horses and the bull ( inspired from his visit to Spain and witnessing the Bull Fighting ) have appeared more than 7000 times in Das’s works. Whatever medium Das worked on, he effortlessly mastered. Not one to be stuck to one style, Das experimented and worked on various series and mediums. His works involve the quick use of the brush and pen to create masterpieces that have a dynamic effect, potent with power.

    Sunil Das was a Master Modern Indian Artist from Bengal. He joined Government College of Arts & Craft, Calcutta, 1954–59. Extremely successful right from his college days, Das has been extremely well lauded by art critics, the press, artists and the art and culture glitterati across the world. Das was the youngest artist to have won the National Award, “The Taj Shiromani Kala Puraskar” recipient of the much-coveted Government of India’s 4th Highest Civilian Award, “The Padma Shri” (2014). Highly talented Das has done shows all across the world, got fame as early as while he was still in college, the youngest recipient of the “Lalit Kala Academy Awards” and received a scholarship to study at L’Ecole Nationale supérieure des Beaux-arts, Paris in 1961–63.
