        Sunil Das, Indian 1939-2015

        Est: £600 - £800

Sunil Das, Indian 1939-2015 Charcoal drawing of a bull, 95 cm x 60 cm  Sunil Das was one of India's most important post-modernist painters adopting different styles of painting throughout his career. He joined the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata in 1955, then won a French Government Scholarship to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He rose to prominence early when he became the only Indian artist to win the Lalit Kala Akademi’s national award while still an undergraduate student, in 1959 receiving the award again in 1978. In 2014 the Government of India conferred upon Sunil its fourth-highest civilian award, the Padma Shri. Known for his expressive drawings of horses and bulls, Das visited Spain in the 1960s and after witnessing a series of bullfights, made several drawings and paintings of bulls. His flawless drawings capture the speed, power, and energy, of the animals, symbolic of the energy, aggression, and power, of modern times and of his own untamed youthful spirit and a sense of liberation.

SUNIL DAS (1939-2015) "HORSE" SIGNED & DATED 2007 Pencil and Charcoal on Paper Size: 16.5 x 12 inches Acquired Directly Through The Artist Property Of An Italian Gentleman  Footnotes: Sunil Das, a prominent post-modernist figure in Indian art, has consistently defied artistic stagnation by embracing various styles throughout his career. Recognizing the weight of responsibility that accompanies his status as a celebrated painter, Das remains deeply committed to connecting with ordinary people emotions and the realities they face, particularly those at the grassroots level. Initially renowned for his extraordinary horse drawings, producing a staggering 7000 pieces between 1950 and 1960, Sunil Das underwent a transformation during a 1962 visit to Spain when he became enamoured with the electrifying world of bullfights Now in his sixties, Sunil Das reflects on his extensive career, marked by nine to ten distinct phases, each characterized by exceptional skill and unwavering integrity. He has fluidly transitioned from one artistic style to another throughout his artistic journey. Das creative process is a testament to his profound connection with the subject matter. He interprets and conceptualizes authentic feelings about reality, transmuting them in the crucible of his mind before expressing them on canvas. This artistic alchemy involves relentless exploration of colours and shapes until they converge into the desired composition, akin to a conductor harmonizing various instruments into a symphonic masterpiece. Sunil Das’s transformative journey took him to Europe on a French art scholarship, where he studied at the prestigious Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts. A few months in Spain sparked his enduring passion for horses and bulls. Additionally, his artistic influences include his study of sculpture in Santiniketan, Kolkata, and graphic art in Paris. The resulting fusion of structural rigidity and depth from these influences is evident in his artworks. Sunil Das’s canvases transcend the physical attributes of his subjects, delving into their associative qualities. Although he occasionally portrays human figures, his depictions are often skewed, bordering on macabre surrealism. His series on women, particularly those with enigmatic, beguiling eyes, conveys a range of emotions, including the sensual, and underscores the societal pressures experienced by women. In his artistic palette, Sunil Das predominantly shuns vibrant or warm colours, opting instead for soft browns, mauves, and whites in the background to amplify the drama of life. His artistic ethos blends talent with tireless effort, relying on suggestion and minimalism to convey powerful messages. While his forms may appear surreal, they possess a morbid fascination, serving as a reflection on the inhumanity within humanity. Sunil Das achieved a remarkable feat by being the sole Indian artist to receive a National Award, the Shiromani Kala Puraskar, while still an undergraduate at the Government College of Art and Craft in Kolkata. His prolific career includes participation in numerous exhibitions, and his works are held in esteemed collections, including those of the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi, the Glenbarra Art Museum in Japan, and the Ludwig Museum in Germany.

Christies NYC Lot 239 dated 11 th March 2019 3. Rosebery’s London – Lot 284 dated 14 th June 2023 Provenance: Private UK collection, Property of a British Lady Footnotes: Sunil Das, a prominent post-modernist figure in Indian art, has consistently defied artistic stagnation by embracing various styles throughout his career. Recognizing the weight of responsibility that accompanies his status as a celebrated painter, Das remains deeply committed to connecting with ordinary people's emotions and the realities they face, particularly those at the grassroots level.Initially renowned for his extraordinary horse drawings, producing a staggering 7000 pieces between 1950 and 1960, Sunil Das underwent a transformation during a 1962 visit to Spain when he became enamoured with the electrifying world of bullfights. Now in his sixties, Sunil Das reflects on his extensive career, marked by nine to ten distinct phases, each characterized by exceptional skill and unwavering integrity. He has fluidly transitioned from one artistic style to another throughout his artistic journey.Das's creative process is a testament to his profound connection with the subject matter. He interprets and conceptualizes authentic feelings about reality, transmuting them in the crucible of his mind before expressing them on canvas. This artistic alchemy involves relentless exploration of colours and shapes until they converge into the desired composition, akin to a conductor harmonizing various instruments into a symphonic masterpiece.Sunil Das's transformative journey took him to Europe on a French art scholarship, where he studied at the prestigious Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts. A few months in Spain sparked his enduring passion for horses and bulls. Additionally, his artistic influences include his study of sculpture in Santiniketan, Kolkata, and graphic art in Paris. The resulting fusion of structural rigidity and depth from these influences is evident in his artworks.Sunil Das's canvases transcend the physical attributes of his subjects, delving into their associative qualities. While his forms may appear surreal, they possess a morbid fascination, serving as a reflection on the inhumanity within humanity.Sunil Das achieved a remarkable feat by being the sole Indian artist to receive a National Award, the Shiromani Kala Puraskar, while still an undergraduate at the Government College of Art and Craft in Kolkata. His prolific career includes participation in numerous exhibitions, and his works are held in esteemed collections, including those of the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi, the Glenbarra Art Museum in Japan, and the Ludwig Museum in Germany.

        SUNIL DAS : Horse

        Est: RM5,000 - RM12,000

Das’ style of work is very original and shows no specific influence. He had risen to fame like MF Hussain with his famous paintings of horses, to the extent that he was nicknamed ‘Ghora Das’ ( Hindi which means Horse Das) Like Hussain, Das was inspired by the force and strength of the moving horse. The horses and the bull ( inspired from his visit to Spain and witnessing the Bull Fighting ) have appeared more than 7000 times in Das’s works. Whatever medium Das worked on, he effortlessly mastered. Not one to be stuck to one style, Das experimented and worked on various series and mediums. His works involve the quick use of the brush and pen to create masterpieces that have a dynamic effect, potent with power.

SUNIL DAS : Two Galloping Horses

        Est: RM5,000 - RM12,000

One of India’s important post-modernist painters, Sunil Das rose to prominence with his drawing of horses. “I must have done 7000 horses between 1950 to 60,” he says. “In 1962, I went to Spain, where I was fascinated by the bull fights.” Sunil Das’s paintings not only express the physical attributes of his subjects but also their associative ones. Every once in a while he paints human beings, but his depiction of the human anatomy is skewed, to a point that it almost borders on macabre surrealism. Hardly ever painting in loud or warm colours, Sunil Das uses soft brown, mauve and white in the background to bring out the drama of life. He blends talent with hard work. He works by suggestion and minimalism.
