Blind-stamp of the NH Historical Society to the title-leaf of each volume, and a mechanical stamp (35041, 35042) to the head of the recto of the following leaf in each volume. Small oval blind-stamp of J.S. Waters, Baltimore to the front free end-paper of each volume. Charles Darwin was a lad of 22 when he set off as a supernumerary gentleman-naturalist aboard HMS Beagle under the command of Robert FitzRoy on 27 December 1831. He defied his father’s wishes in going, receiving financial sponsorship from his cousin Josiah Wedgwood II (pioneer of bone china). The trip brought Darwin through the Southern Hemisphere over the course of nearly five years; he began on the coasts of South America, visited the Galapagos Islands and sailed west through New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and finally Brazil again before returning to Britain. The voyage of Beagle (her second) was the great formative experience of Darwin’s youth. In his Life and Letters (I.61) he wrote: “The voyage of the Beagle has been by far the most important event in my life, and has determined my whole career...” Though initially minded toward geology, the variety among species from island to island in the Galapagos chain — finches first demonstrated the pattern — captured the young naturalist’s attention; this is the true beginning of Darwin’s articulation of his theories of evolution by natural selection. James S. Waters was a publisher in Baltimore, active from the 1840’s through the 1860’s, publishing historical and religious texts, and in particular the work of James Fenimore Cooper. Waters worked with Ticknor of Boston, but perhaps Harper sent the set to him as a professional courtesy. The bookplate below that of the New Hampshire Historical Society is indecipherable, but it does not appear to be Waters’s. The donor of the set to the NHHS was Professor John Robie Eastman (1836–1913), a distinguished astronomer at the Naval Observatory in Washington. In 1898 he was elected the first president of the Washington Academy of Sciences. Eastman was an alumnus and later trustee of Dartmouth. Theodore “Ted” Benttinen (1948-2023) was an MIT-educated oceanographer and explorer who went to both poles on research missions. Benttinen amassed a formidable collection of books of exploration, particularly strong in Pacific voyages as well as in polar accounts. The present volume was lot 87 in the Sotheby's New York 9 December 2024 sale of his library. References: Freeman F16; Sabin 18647.

Darwin (Charles) On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, third edition, presentation copy, presentation inscription 'From the Author' in a secretary's hand, John Murray, 1861

    Est: £15,000 - £20,000

Darwin (Charles) On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, third edition (seventh thousand), presentation copy to John Gilbert Baker, the inscription on the front endpaper in the hand of Murray's clerk reads 'From the Author', with an A.L.s from Alfred Russel Wallace loosely inserted (4pp., folded) half-title, folding plate, advertisement leaf at end, a few occasional spots or instances of finger-soiling, hinges starting, original blind-stamped cloth, tears in cloth to spine ends, also bumped, and other extremities rubbed,  [Freeman 381], 8vo, John Murray, 1861. *** A presentation copy with a fascinating association, emerging directly from Darwin’s scientific milieu. John Gilbert Baker (1834-1920) was appointed in 1866 to the herbarium at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. He was known to Darwin in his botanical research, and references to Baker - exchange of specimens, the collections at Kew and Baker's own research -  appear strewn across Darwin's correspondence with other notable botanists of the day. For example, Joseph Dalton Hooker (Darwin's close friend and then director of Kew), particularly commends Baker in a 1878 letter, '[he] is the most hardworking useful man & was elected F R.S. last year. his Services to this establishment have been most self-sacrificing. & he is a general favorite'. Most interestingly for our copy, an 1881 letter from Alfred Russel Wallace regarding wind dispersal of seeds over mountains in Africa, references Baker’s recently published findings on alpine plants of Madagascar as identical with those on the mountains of Abyssinia, the Cameroons, and other African mountains [letters accessible online at the Cambridge University 'Darwin Correspondence Project'] Meanwhile, the A.L.s from Alfred Wallace Russel here loosely inserted, also discusses research and botanical experimentation. More specifically he refers to a list he is compiling of ‘“reputed” endemic’ plants and animals, the purpose of which is ‘calling attention to the admitted fact that there are some differences – specific and varietal – between the fauna & flora of our islands & the continent’. He also expresses that ‘I am rather disappointed that during the last ten years so little has been done to settle, either by experiment or by exhaustive comparison of British & Continental examples the numerous cases of such differences given in my earlier lists’. Having been presented by Darwin to Baker, this copy continued in botanical circles; passed to his son Edmund Gilbert Baker (1864-1949), botanist and plant collector, who later presented it to Job Edward Lousley (1907-1976), amateur botanist renowned for his knowledge of British flora and author of many publications [typed slip dated 1947, signed by Lousley in ink, tipped-in to pastedown]. Overall a notable association copy, linking together Darwin and several of his botanical colleagues.
