      HENRY DARVALL (ENGLISH, FL. 1848-89) Red Riding Hood - a Pre-Raphaelite painting of a girl in a wood Oil on panel Signed and inscribed with the artist's address verso Henry Darvall is recorded as being resident in Eversholt Street in 1862. Henry Darvall was a portrait, genre and landscape painter. His early works show the influence of The Pre-Raphaelites. He moved to Venice in 1875 and sent paintings of local views to The Royal Academy. His work of circa 1851, titled, The Lady of Shalott, showing the influence of the Pre-Raphaelite Movement, is held at The Wolverhampton Art Gallery. Around 1858 Darvall met Lewis Carroll (1832-1898) who had seen and admired the artist’s work at The Royal Academy. They viewed art exhibitions together, Darvall acting as guide. Carroll commissioned Henry Darvall to paint a portrait of Irene MacDonald, the daughter of the writer George MacDonald. Carroll is recorded as visiting Darvall’s Studio on 1st April 1864. On 12th July 1864 Carroll photographed Darvall at Lambeth Palace.14 x 10 inches (36 x 25.5 cm.)

      HENRY DARVALL (ENGLISH, FL. 1848-89) A flower seller on the Thames Embankment. The Tower of London beyond Oil on panel Signed with initials Signed and dated on the reverse 1863 with the original artist's label Henry Darvall was a portrait, genre and landscape painter.
