Nelms Acquired from Judge John R. Nelms by a private Texas collector. Tackhouse offers the quiet parts of cowboying by showing a semi-covered shed, with much of the roof blown away by the scouring West Texas winds, to house all the different parts of “horse furniture” used to cowboy in the Davis Mountains. In this painting the artist employed a much heavier impasto than he typically used. Moreover, he rendered the foreground using palette knife, a technique fairly rare in Darge’s oeuvre, or dragged a fairly dry brush loaded with paint across in the foreground in the final application of paint. The cowboy in the background left appears to be the wizened type who has “made a hand” his entire life, and is repairing a thrown show on his groundtied bay horse. A California-style saddle rests in the corner left while the right is a Texas/Mexican-style saddle. Jaquimas, halters, bridles and nose bags line the walls while reatas are scattered about. This type tackroom existed or exists in ranches all across North America. “I want to register the ranchman as he lives today, his daily habits, his mode of living and doing business, before this part of the country [West Texas] gives way to progress and the civilization of the big cities, which today, in many instances, has taken the romance out of the West, paved roads instead of trails, automobiles instead of horses.” - Fred Darge Tackhouse room reminds this writer of something J. Evetts Haley wrote in 1936 while gathering saddles for an exhibition at the University of Texas: “….everyone uses it and nobody repairs it, until the riggin’ is torn loose and the lining is all gone. Finally, somebody cleans up the saddle shed and throws the old kak [saddle] on the pile of barbed wire behind the barn where the wind and rain curl off the rawhide, and the tree falls to pieces. Nelms Acquired from Judge John R. Nelms by a private Texas collector. Rustler was included in Darge’s one-man show at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts in 1947. It may very well be somewhat autobiographical from Darge’s days as a cowboy in West Texas. And, cattle rustling continues to this day. The “rustlers” have a hastily built fire with a running iron heating up. The rustler on the sorrel horse to the left mounts a Texas saddle, double-rigged square skirts, and he wears no leggings. The cowboy mounting the paint horse (possibly based on Darge’s hand-carved model) rides a California-style saddle with round skirts and swell forks. He also sports 1930s-style chaps and the wide heel bands on his spurs. Born in Germany, Darge came to the United States in 1924 and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1924 to 1930. During the early 1930s he worked as a cowhand in the American Southwest. Darge became part of the Lone Star Regionalists through his work shown in the Dallas Allied Arts exhibitions; the Texas General; and the Southwestern Exhibition of Prints and Drawings. The Dallas Museum of Fine Arts and the Laguna Gloria Art Museum in Austin hosted solo exhibitions for him in 1947 and 1948, respectively, and he had another at Palo Duro Canyon in 1950. After 1945 Darge began making annual sketching trips to West Texas and New Mexico. He became especially enamored of the Davis Mountains and the Big Bend region which are often the setting for his cowboy and ranching paintings. Commentary by Michael R. Descent within the family to the present owner. The Stampede is Darge’s homage to the old-time trail drivers and the drovers who continued to take herds to rail heads after fencing of West Texas began in the early 1880s on ranches such as the Frying Pans and T Anchors in the Texas Panhandle. And, unlike most cowboy paintings, Darge accurately renders the lead cowboy attempting to turn the herd into a mill with his “oilskins” and not a six shooter. Most cowboys on the rails did not wear sidearms as they simply got in the way. The lead cowboy also wears pre-1930 chaparreras, rides a “bear trap” swell-fork saddle with “monkey-nose” tapaderos on its stirrups, a sign of status among cowboys in West Texas and New Mexico. The Stampede may be Darge’s masterpiece along with a now-destroyed painting of a trail drive. An avid and talented woodcarver, Darge carved his own frames and even hand-carved mini sculptures to use as props. For example, he often “posed” his carved paint horse in his studio and “added” it to his paintings. The hand-carved frame on The Stampede is a tour de force with its hand-carved horse and cow profiles in each corner and a longhorn at the top and (possibly) Hereford at the bottom. In this painting, the artist depicted a chuck wagon probably in the Davis Mountains of West Texas employing much heavier impasto than he typically used. Moreover, he rendered the sky and foreground using palette knife, a technique fairly rare in Darge's oeuvre. His signature was probably rendered using the end of the brush due to the thick paint.

As you can see from these paintings, Darge is one of the best early Texas artist at painting horses, using his ranching experience. Rock formations, sage brush, and mountains create a decorative affect that serves as a setting for his horses and riders.
