    Ray Lee (Raymond) Darby (1938 - 2016) Untitled, 1981 Gouache. Kiowa artist Ray Darby was born and raised in Oklahoma. He came to prominence in the 1970’s and continued successfully into the 1980’s and 1990’s. Thayhaiya is his Indian name, translating to Hunting Horse, which is how he signed most of his work. Darby’s work is in the Museum of the American Indian's permanent collection.     Gouache on paper. 15" by 20" in matte. Ray Lee (Raymond) Darby (1938 - 2016) was active/lived in Oklahoma, Tennessee. Ray Darby is known for Landscape painting, singing, preaching. Raymond Lee Doyebi/Darby, 77, Lawton, went to his heavenly home on Wednesday Jan. 13, 2016. He passed away with pneumonia at a Lawton hospital. Ray spent his formative years traveling and singing with his family's gospel group and could sing and play the guitar and piano. He lived out at the Saddle Mountain area at his great-great-grandfather Hunting Horse's home, where he was taught about God and the rich history and background of the Kiowa culture and tradition. He continued to travel with his family and sing until his father passed away at an early age. He graduated from Cache High School and attended college for two years and was in the ROTC. He had many friends and admirers who enjoyed listening to him along with his brother and sister sing at various functions and churches in the surrounding areas. He was also a Native American artist and traveled to surrounding states selling his beautiful paintings to doctors and lawyers. Allard Auction Collection Inv: KAP
