      Anita Rambonnet-Daponte (1895-1955)

      Est: €600 - €800

A self-portrait of the artist signed with initials and dated 'ar. -33' (lower left) oil on canvas, 99x99 cm Anita Rambonnet-Daponte is described in the ‘Vrouwen aan bod, vrouwenaanbod’ (Women Discussed, Women on Offer) exhibition catalogue as ‘a multifaceted all-rounder’. And rightly so, it seems, when we see what this flamboyant woman has achieved during her lifetime. She was born in Smyrna (now called Izmir) from a marriage between a Dutch mother and an Italian count. She studied English in the Netherlands and after her marriage to G.F. Rambonnet in 1919, the couple left for the Dutch East Indies where her husband became Mayor of Soekaboemi, and later Buitenzorg (now Bogor). After the birth of their two daughters, she started to develop her artistic talents. It was in this period that she met famous artists in Batavia, such as Rudolf Bonnet, Charles Sayers, Gabriëlle Ferrand, Carel Dake and Henri van Velthuysen, with whom she shared exhibitions in the Dutch East Indies and the Netherlands. From 1931-1938 she was included in several exhibitions at the ‘Kunstkring Art Gallery’ in Jakarta. Anita Rambonnet’s works are characterised by a combination of strong shapes and planes, and an expressive use of colour. Her paintings evoke associations with the figurative work of the French artist Auguste Herbin. As well as painting, Rambonnet also designed posters, an example of which the Venduehuis had on offer at the last Indonesian Art Sale in September 2018. Furthermore, Anita Rambonnet-Daponte published detective stories with her own illustrations (under the pseudonym of Mr. J. Palet), she was a Dutch-to-English translator, the editor-in-chief of the Wereldnieuws, Filmwereld and Eva magazines, and she was a presenter on the Dutch East Indies Radio station, Nederlands-Indische Radio Omroep.

      Anita Rambonnet-Daponte (1895-1955)

      Est: €80 - €120

Design for a poster of the 'N.V. Bandoengsche Kininefabriek'. signed with monogram 'ar' (in a circle, lower right) gouache and collage on paper, unframed, 76x77 cm Anita Rambonnet-Daponte (born Smyrna, Turkey 1895 - The Hague 1955) had an Italian father from a Ducal family in Venice and a Dutch mother. She studied English at the University of Amsterdam. In 1919 she left for Java together with her husband Mr. G.F. Rambonnet. In the 1920s and 1930s he was the Mayor of Soekaboemi and Buitenzorg. Anita was a striking personality in the Indonesian ‘high society’. Starting from her time in Soekaboemi she developped into a qualified artist. She has a varied oeuvre of still lifes, portraits and caricatures, often with a rich colour scheme. She exhibited her work alone, but also together with painters such as Rudolf Bonnet, Carel Dake Jr., Gabriëlle Ferrand, Ben Frank, Willy Sayers and Henry van Velthuysen. These exhibitions were in the Dutch East Indies and in The Netherlands. Apart from painting, she was a writer and - under the pseudonym Mr. J. Palet - known for her three Indonesian detective novels: ‘De moord in het berghotel’, ‘13’ and ‘Paladijnen in Péot’. She also designed the book covers. For years she was an interpreter/translator Dutch-English for Government and Justice. She spoke and wrote five languages fluently. Finally she also designed stage costumes and posters, among others for the Bandoengsche Kininefabriek. She signed her work normally with 'ar', as we can see at the lot now in auction.
