    • Verney L. Danvers (British, 1895-1973) - Bexhill-on-Sea, Sussex (De La Warr Pavilion)
      Dec. 13, 2016

Verney L. Danvers (British, 1895-1973) - Bexhill-on-Sea, Sussex (De La Warr Pavilion)

      Est: £2,000 - £3,000

Gouache on board Signed, lower right 78 x 124cm (30 3/4 x 48 3/4in.) The present work was produced for Southern Railway in the late 1930s. The corresponding poster was issued at the same time as a view of Ramsgate by Danvers, but there is no record of it ever having been offered on the auction market. The De La Warr Pavilion, designed by Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff, was constructed in 1935 and is one of the first major Modernist public buildings to be constructed in Britain. Its purpose was to provide a cultural space for Bexhill and the surrounding area and attract new visitors to the region - an objective shared by Southern Railway. However, the intervention of World War II and subsequent lack of funding saw the building fall into disrepair in the second half of the twentieth century. In 2002, the Pavilion received a significant grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Arts Council and in 2005, after extensive restoration, the De La Warr Pavilion re-opened as a centre of contemporary art and culture. Dec. 13, 2016

Verney L. Danvers (British, 1895-1973) - New Brighton

      Est: £800 - £1,200

Gouache and watercolour on cardboard Signed lower left, titled and dated 1953/54 , verso Cardboard 106 x 67.5cm (41 3/4 x 26 5/8in.); painting 100 x 61cm (39 3/8 x 24 in.) Unframed Executed for British Rail in the early 1950s, the present work depicts New Brighton, a seaside resort on the northeastern tip of the Wirral peninsula. The town gets its name from its transformation in the 1830s by Liverpool merchant, James Atherton, who saw the potential of the landscape to become a fashionable resort for the area s wealthy industrialists and landed gentry in the manner of Regency Brighton on the south coast. Provenance: Property from a Private Collection IMPORTANT: This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.

      Jan. 12, 2014

      Folkstone / Southern Railway. 1947

      Est: $1,700 - $2,000

Artist: VERNEY L. DANVERS Size: 24 3/4 x 39 7/8 in./63 x 101.2 cm McCorquodale, London With his customary sense of chic firmly in place, Danvers transports us to Folkestone, the Southern Railways destination located eight miles west of its one-time ferry port rival Dover. As opposed to another poster he created for Folkestone thirteen years earlier (see PAI-XXXI, 416), the posterist places us out to sea, where on a clear day such as this, we might catch a glimpse of the French shore in the distance if we were to turn around. And even though Danvers has changed our vantage point, he still gives us a spectacular view of The Leas, the clifftop grassy promenade laid out in the mid-19th century at the height of the resort's heyday.
