A prolific artist, Dans’s paintings are instantly recognizable with her meticulous attention to detail, particularly with the delicate embroideries that pop out even more with her penchant for depicting her subjects in front of dark backgrounds. In Pink Serenade, her talent for painting the calado, a traditional Philippine open-thread work pattern used in making the barong tagalog, is evident. The black background pushes the attention squarely on the intricately painted fabric and the vibrant pink flowers which are the only pop of color in the otherwise monochromatic piece. Watercolor is notably a hard medium to control; and yet, Dans managed to wield the problematic medium to make the piece look opaque, quite unlike the transparency watercolor offers. Precision and patience went into her depiction of the calado, replicating the lacelike texture with an incredibly meticulous eye. Throughout her illustrious career, Dans sought out ways to find her niche. “..I did not want to be like Amorsolo and so forth. I had to look for myself,” she once said as quoted by a 2024 Lifestyle Inquirer article. “I found myself in still life. Not many people around the world do still life. And I looked for original ways of doing still life. Why does everything have to be on a table? Why always fruits and flowers? Why not rags, objects inside old cartons?" Umagang Pagbati signed and dated 2000 (lower left) watercolor on paper 30" x 22 1/2" (76 cm x 57 cm) WRITE UP Araceli Limcaco Dans humbly began a career in the arts after the war by painting portraits to earn money in order to support her family. The young Araceli would then go on to hone her practice at the UP College of Fine Arts, where she was mentored by the master classical realist Fernando Amorsolo. As a student, Dans would also sell sketches and paint portraits of her peers to fund her own studies. All this practice allowed her to have an adept grasp of technical foundations early on, greatly impressing her mentor. Thus, Amorsolo let her take advanced classes, allowing her to complete her degree in just three years. While her forte began with portraiture, Dans found her muse in the details of the calado or the lacelike thread work of the barong tagalog. Here, for example, Dans paints a vibrant floral arrangement complemented by the demure intricacy of a calado curtain from behind. The juxtaposition is interesting: the elaborate quality of human handiwork and that of nature’s, now woven together in one composition that finds God in the details. The result is a quaint sense of home and history that threads through the exquisite detail of the brush. If Amorsolo’s Filipiniana finds its epitome in the sun-kissed women in baro’t saya basking in the warmth of rural life, Dans f inds it indoors within the gentleness of domestic living. (Pie Tiausas)

Dans Though Araceli painted numerous scenes and subjects throughout her artistic career, she was most lauded for her nuanced and intricate depictions of the Calado weaving style. The Calado is an open-work style that is commonly utilized in a myriad of Tagalog and Luzon textiles. It is most often utilized as motifs in the making and designing of the traditional barong tagalog and baro’t saya. In the piece, one can see the delicately rendered Calado cloth positioned next to a trio of beautiful and timeless red roses. Romulo, Beth Day Romulo, born Elizabeth Jane West Feagles (May 25, 1924 – November 11, 2022), was a prolific book author, celebrated journalist, and philanthropist. In her decades-long career as an author, Beth Day wrote 31 books, including The Philippines: Shattered Showcase of Democracy in Asia (1975), The Writer, the Lover, and the Diplomat: Life with Carlos P. Romulo (co-authored with David F. Hyatt, 2015), and eight children’s books. For about four decades, beginning in 1986, she served as associate editor and columnist for the Manila Bulletin. She also authored articles for magazines, such as Asia Inc. As a philanthropist, Beth Day served as a board member of the Carlos P. Romulo Foundation for Peace and Development, the Helping Hands Foundation, and Ballet Philippines. She also served as president of the Corregidor Foundation and a trustee of the Filipino-American Memorial Endowment, which aims to preserve the legacies and values of the Filipino- American struggle during World War II. Beth Day received an honorary degree from the Philippine Women’s University in 1975 for her literary achievements and an honorary doctorate from the Baguio Colleges Foundation in 1981. Limcaco-Dans introduced the Calado Series in 1986 in her solo exhibition at the Museum of Philippine Art (MOPA), which featured portraits and watercolor still lifes depicting hand-embroidered piña fabric. The book Kayamanan: Biographies of Philippine Visual Artists describe Limcaco-Dans’ calado paintings as “highly realistic renderings of embroidery of jusi and piña combined with flowers, baskets, and boxes to create meaningful juxtapositions.” Limcaco-Dans’ Calado Series evokes the works of 19th-century Filipino pioneer secular artists Damian Domingo, Justiniano Asuncion, Simon Flores, and Antonio Malantic, who depicted the natives in their native wardrobes. The calado style of hand embroidery, used in Filipiniana clothing, originated from Lumban, Laguna, known as the “Embroidery Capital of the Philippines.” Hence, it is referred to as Burdang Lumban. According to the Lumban-based barong maker Heritage Barong, the calado is executed by pulling out the fibers in the fabric to reduce the fiber count. The remaining intact fibers are stitched into various open-thread patterns. Limcaco-Dans evokes the exquisite and intricate craftsmanship of the calado in her “embroidered paintings,” emphasizing her keen eye for minute details and artistic rigor. National Artist for Dance Leonor Orosa Goquingo praised LimcacoDans’ Calado series, referring to them as “perfection itself, the epitome of elegance.” In her calado paintings, LimcacoDans does not employ whites in her fabric; it is the surface of the unpainted canvas. While most of her calados feature other images, Limcaco-Dans depicts, at times, the hand-embroidered cloth in its sole, unaccompanied state, like in the case of this particular piece. In a work that speaks of sublimity and the beauty of the indigenous, Limcaco-Dans invites the viewer to revel in the intricacy and brilliance of our native embroidery style. She was accepted to the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts by the celebrated painter when she was still a high school senior, allowing her to obtain a bachelor’s degree in only three years. Amorsolo did that for Dans to continue pursuing her career in painting, saying that she had an advanced capability when she entered the halls of the Fine Arts college. Conceivably the most celebrated and iconic pieces of Dans are her masterly rendered depictions of calado, the exquisite white patterned embroidery on pineapple fiber that was often associated with 19th-century Filipino women in the upper echelons of society. According to the artist, her luminously exquisite representation of the calados is inspired by her nationalist predisposition and by 19th-century painters Damian Domingo and Simon Flores, among other celebrated Filipino master painters of that period in history. As Sylvia Mendez Ventura, Leonor Orosa Goquingco, and her daughter Maria Araceli Dans Lee described in their monograph titled Araceli Limcaco Dans: “Araceli Dans and calado became twin sisters, just as Picasso and cubism were twin brothers.”

Araceli Limcaco-Dans’s paintings successfully transcend the trite and sentimental by virtue of the rich complexities inherent in the subjects she chooses. Beneath the simplicity of the juxtapositions is a host of possible meanings just waiting to be deciphered. In this work from 1983, pieces of three different cloths—a delicately embroidered lace, a sky blue colored silk, and another multi-colored cloth—rest in a native basket, freshly washed and ready to be hanged as signified by the two white clothespins. Dans demonstrates an unassailable fidelity to nature in the realist tradition. What ensues is a smart juxtaposition between textures, colors—from intricate fabric details to the serene and wild colors of the fabrics—and the different roles of a woman—a wife, mother, and a provider.
