    Stan Dann (1931-2001) Abstract Carved Wood Relief Panel. Signed and dated 1983 along side. Stan Dann was a respected San Francisco area artist whose work captures the light-hearted spirit of the 60's California art scene. His hand carved custom wood signs and doors started to appear in front of shops in and around the Bay Area during the early 1960's and helped define the hand-made, bohemian aesthetic of that period, His exceptional craftsmanship made his work in high demand with prominent architects and designers of the era. Dann's long career demonstrates a consistent command of the medium. His dynamic, puzzle-like wood reliefs from 1980 through 2012 cement his unique vision in California contemporary art. Artist Stan Dann began his career with an advertising firm in San Francisco in the 1960s, where his painted bas-relief signage immediately turned heads. When Dann shifted his focus to fine art in the 1980s, his mixed-media sculptures - such as this work from 1988 - also found success and are now present in major collections such as the Crocker Art Museum, San Francisco, CA and The Hechinger Collection, Washington, DC. Visually, Dann's skillful manipulation of material makes viewers question medium and space, as his polychromed wood often suggests ceramic and the subtle three-dimensionality entices a closer look.
