George Daniels (1854-1940) Lots 121-126 A collection of cartoons for stained glass by George Daniels (1854-1940) These full-size working drawings by the artist George Daniels (1854-1940) were all made for stained glass windows dating from the 1920s and 1930s, which were, in part, designed by the architect Frederick Charles Eden FSA FRIBA (1864-1944). Although nominally the work of F C Eden - who secured the commissions and was responsible for the execution of the designs - the windows were actually the result of a collaborative process, in which George Daniels’ cartoons were an essential component. Eden’s contribution was limited to drawing initial sketches and creating the ornamental border patterns; all the figure-drawing – as in this collection of cartoons – was Daniels’ work. George Daniels (1854-1940) 'Nativity', a full-size stained glass design for St. Peter's Church, Rushden, Northamptonshire, 1924 numbered '455' and inscribed 'Left hand light', pencil 57.5 x 110.5cm, mounted on a board

In 1981 he received an MBE for his services to horology - the first watchmaker ever to receive such an honour. The current lot incorporates his patented 'Co-Axial' escapement which Daniels developed during the 1970s. The revolutionary escapement is designed to run unaffected by the deterioration of its lubricant. The Millennium wristwatches were made by George Daniels in a very limited series to mark the start of the new millennium. Hand-made, each piece is unique and slight variances can be observed whether in case metal, hands or decorative finishes. The prototype Millennium wristwatch and three further examples of the model were exhibited at the George Daniels Retrospective exhibition held at Sotheby's in July 2006, exhibits 33-36, pages 86-89 of the Exhibition Catalogue.
