      MARY REED DANIEL (1946 - ) Untitled (Magenta Abstraction). Hand-made paper construction, 1988. Approximately 318x292 mm; 12 1/2x11 1/2 inches. Signed in ink, lower right recto. Signed, dated and inscribed "Chicago" in ink, verso. Provenance: private collection, Georgia. Born in East St. Louis, Illinois, Chicago-based artist Mary Reed Daniel achieved her artistic training at Southern Illinois University. Rebecca Zorach writes that in 1968 Daniel was part of a growing artist's scene on Chicago 31st Street near Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive - she opened the communal gallery 353 East with artists Bill Daniel, Howard Mallory and José Williams. In 1978 she received the Milliren Co. of NY Purchase Award. Daniel's paintings are in the collection of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American Art, and have been exhibited nationally and internationally. Her career is profiled in Dr. Leslie King-Hammond and bell hooks, Gumbo Ya Ya: An Anthology of Contemporary African American Women Artists. Zorach p. 54; hooks/King-Hammond pp. 62-63.

      Mary Reed Daniel b. 1946 Rasheda No 2 Watercolor and dye on paper 1990 signed artist label verso Provenance: The Estate of Kathlyn "Elaine" Moragne. Ms. Moragne grew up near the Cabrini Green housing complex in Chicago. At a time when women, especially African American, experienced significant barriers to education, Elaine her BA in psychopathology from University of Illinois (1958) and her MS in clinical nutrition from Rush University. Throughout her life, Elaine demonstrated her commitment to the economic revitalization and cultural recognition of the Black community, spearheading the work of Southside bank, starting a radio station in Boston supporting the needs of minority residents, and serving on the Women's Board of the Chicago Urban League. She was involved with the South Side Community Art Center for 20 plus years, and supported the work of African American artists, both financially and in an administrative capacity. She helped establish the loaning program at the Art Institute of Chicago, allowing homeowners to borrow or rent certain works to display in their homes. 10-1/4 x 7 inches
