      MONIQUE DANICHE ( France, 1736-1824). "Portrait of a Lady, 1808. Oil on canvas. It has a late 19th-century frame with faults. Signed and dated in the lower right area. Measurements: 63 x 53 cm; 81 x 70 cm (frame). Female portrait in which we are presented with the effigy of a young lady whose clothes indicate that it is a portrait of the 19th century, to which we can add the combed hair. This style became popular during Romanticism, a period in which fashion enjoyed great splendour and was reflected in society, giving rise to concepts such as the dandy or petimetre. With regard to the pose, the spontaneity achieved by placing the hand under the cheek is noteworthy, a gesture that masterfully favours a play of curved lines that bring gentleness to the figure of the protagonist, who is enveloped in a complete darkness interrupted only by the lightness of the skin and the candour of the cheeks. As in the rest of Europe, in the 19th century portraiture became the leading genre par excellence in French painting as a consequence of the new social structures, embodying the ultimate expression of the transformation of the taste and mentality of the new bourgeois clientele. This genre embodied the permanent presence of the image of its protagonists, to be enjoyed in the intimacy of a studio, in the daily warmth of a family cabinet or presiding over the main salons of the house.
