NATHANIEL DANCE (BRITISH 1735-1811), POWLETT WRIGHTE (THE YOUNGER) STANDING BEFORE ENGLEFIELD HOUSE

        Est: £10,000 - £15,000

NATHANIEL DANCE (BRITISH 1735-1811)POWLETT WRIGHTE (THE YOUNGER), STANDING BEFORE ENGLEFIELD HOUSE, BERKSHIREOil on canvas 71.1 x 91.4cm (27 x 35 in.)Provenance:Presumably commissioned by the sitter or the sitter's familyGeorge J. Kidston (1873-1954) of Hazelbury Manor, Box, WiltshireFrost & Reed, LondonPrivate Collection U.S.A.The present lot is a charming example in the mid-eighteenth-century tradition of the English country house conversation piece, having been identified from another almost identical version of the work, currently in a private collection, which is inscribed to the frame with details of the sitter, location and artist. The two pictures are contemporary with each other, and from the style of painting the hand is clearly the same. The only variants are some very slight differences in some of the trees and the painting offered here includes a dog in the foreground, which is omitted from the other version.Powlett Wrighte Junior (1739-1779) was the son of Powlett and Mary Wrighte and the heir to Englefield House and its estate. His father died in 1741, when he was just two years old and the house and estates were left in trust for him until he turned twenty-one. Both paintings show Englefield as it was in the mid-18th century, most likely around 1760, the year Wrighte turned twenty-one and came into full ownership of the house. This would have been a thoroughly plausible reason to commission a painting of himself, standing proudly in front of his country house of which he was now master. Given that his mother, now the chatelaine of several large houses through her second marriage in 1745, would have spent much of her time away from Englefield, it is also entirely plausible that she would have wanted a second version of the picture to hang in one of her other houses to remind her of the house where she lived before and to remind her of her eldest son, who was now the master there.Upon his death in 1779 and, being childless, Wrighte left the Englefield estate to his uncle, Nathaniel Wrighte in accordance with his father's will. Nathaniel Wrighte let the house and estate to Lady Clive, the widow of the famous 'Clive of India' and she lived there for some years in the 1780s.Since that time that house has been architecturally altered more than once - most significantly during the early 19th century when it was given some impressive 'Gothic' additions. The elevation shown in this picture, however, is largely still extant today and the positioning of the church to the viewer's right is similarly unchanged. The descendants of Powlett Wrighte are still the owners of Englefield House today. For Nathaniel Dance, 1760 was also a pivotal year. Initially it is hard to reconcile this picture stylistically with most of the known works by Dance which are much more informed in their handling of his sitters, giving them a certain charisma and depth which is lacking here. However, if we keep the date of 1760 in mind, we note that this predates his trip to Italy, and more specifically Rome, where he met and was influenced by the grand-manner portrait painter Pompeo Batoni. Prior to this trip abroad, the influences of Dance's tutor Francis Hayman are more noticeable. Similar examples of Dance's work in this early style include The Dashwood Family at Wycombe Park (Witt 147628), and Colonel Thornton at Falconer's Hall (Witt 147629).

PORTRAIT OF DR. PERCIVAL POTT ATTR NATHANIEL HOLLAND

        Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Nathaniel Dance-Holland (1735-1811) Attributed Portrait of Dr. Percival Pott Circa 1770 The three-quarter length portrait depicts Dr. Pott in red academic robe and formal white wig seated beside a table with leather bound volumes. Doctor Pott lived from 1713 to 1788. Judging by his age at the time of sitting, this portrait dates to around 1770. An previous appraisal of this painting references a letter from the London art dealer Frost and Reed indicating that, according to the Royal College of Surgeons, this painting was painted by Sir Dance Holland also known as Nathaniel Dance-Holland (1735 - 1811). Neither of these letters are extant at the time of cataloging. This unsigned painting is displayed in a gilded gesso and wood frame of similar age. Dr. Percival Pott was a pioneering figure in the field of surgery during the 18th century. He is also highly regarded for his contributions to the understanding of occupational diseases like Chimney Sweeps' Carcinoma, where he identified soot as the cause of chimney sweeps' occupational cancer. Some sources also associate his findings with the discovery of tuberculosis. He was one of the founders of orthopedics and eponyms like ''Pott's cancer'' and ''Pott's fracture'' continue to be associated with his name in the medical literature. The term Pott's Fracture actually derives from an injury the doctor himself suffered when thrown from a horse riding down Kent Street in Southwark in 1756. Suffering a compound fracture of the leg, but still conscious, he knew as a surgeon that it was often rough and improper treatment at this stage of an injury that prevented proper healing and lead to amputation. He waited on the cold January ground until a door could be delivered and fitted with carrying poles so he could be removed lying down. His attendants carried him through Southwark over London Bridge to Watling Street near Saint Paul, where he lived, and a consultation of surgeons thought the case so desperate that immediate amputation was the only answer. Doctor Pott prevailed and the leg was saved. To this day, this type of ankle fracture is still referred to as 'Pott's Fracture.' During his convalescence, Dr. Pott began his writings and went on to publish a number of books on the practice of surgery. In 1764, he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Surgeons. Canvas measures 50 x 40.25 with a framed size of 56 x 46.25 inches. Sir Nathaniel Dance-Holland, Bt., RA (British, 1735-1811) Portrait of William Brummell (d. 1794) half-length, in a burgundy coat and white stock oil on canvas 75 x 62cm Footnote: The sitter who married Mary Richardson (whose portrait also by Dance, in an identical frame, was sold in these rooms on 19th of June 2014, lot 509) started life as a valet but with brain and ability rose to become private secretary to the Prime Minister, Lord North. His openly flaunted affair with Mary Richardson gave rise to much comment in view of their differing social status. When Brummell was granted a 'grace and favour' apartment at Hampton Court, King George III made it conditional that he married Mary, who was already well aware he was a brilliant young man 'on the rise' and that he would, as indeed he did, become very rich. In 1782 on the resignation of Lord North, having amassed a respectable fortune, he acquired a small country estate, The Grove, Donnington, Berkshire. At his death in 1794, it is said he left £30,000 to each of his three children, of whom the younger son, George, was the famous "Beau" Brummell (1778-1840). Provenance: By descent from the sitter to Georgiana, Lady Pigott (1802-1886), great-great-great-great-grandmother of the present owner.

Sir Nathaniel Dance-Holland (British 1735-1811) Portrait of Thomas Arthington of Arthington Hall

        Est: £10,000 - £15,000

Sir Nathaniel Dance-Holland (British 1735-1811)Portrait of Thomas Arthington of Arthington Hall, Yorkshire, three-quarter-length Oil on canvas136 x 105cm (53½ x 41¼ in.)In a fine 18th century frame Thomas Hardcastle later Arthington of Arthington (c1726-1801) was husband to Frances Wray (d.1815) and son of Sandford Hardcastle (d.1744) and Henrietta Proctor. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Hardcastle of Dublin (d.1720) and Rosamund Arthington (b.1662). Little is known about Thomas Arthington, save that he is listed as the Sheriff of Yorkshire between 1767 and 1768.The Arthingtons had been an established family in the town of Arthington, West Yorkshire since the 12th century when Peter de Athington gave a grant to establish only one of two Cluniac nunneries in England. The nunnary ran until the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries and was formally surrendered in 1540. It is believed that Arthington Hall was built on priory land around 1585 and remained in the Arthington family for a number of centuries. In 1842, the Hall was bought by the Sheepshanks, a family of wool merchants who later added a Victorian extension and another wing. In 2012, after 170 years, the family put the hall up for sale.Sir Nathaniel Dance-Holland, 1st Baronet (1735-1811) was an English portrait painter and later politician. Dance-Holland first studied under Francis Hayman (1708-1776) before travelling abroad to Italy where he met Angelica Kauffman (1741-1807). Upon his return, together with his brother also named George and Hayman, Dance-Holland was one of the founders of the Royal Academy in 1768.Notable commissions during his career include the portraits of King George III and Queen Charlotte, Captain James Cook and the actor David Garrick. In 1790, Dance-Holland retired from painting to become MP for East Grinstead, Sussex where he served until 1802, when he became MP for Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire, a position he held until 1806. In 1807, he returned to East Grinstead serving until his death in 1811 when the baronetcy he had received in 1800 became extinct.
